The Canadian Open is a big tennis tournament. It happens outdoors on hard courts. The event is usually held in Montreal and Toronto in early August.

The tournament changes cities each year. In odd-numbered years, the men's games are in Montreal. The women's games are in Toronto. In even years, they switch cities.

History of the Tournament

The men's tournament started a long time ago, in 1881. Its first home was the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club. The women's tournament began later, in 1892.

Only two other major tennis tournaments are older. These are Wimbledon and the US Open. This makes the Canadian Open one of the oldest in the world!

Before 1968, it was called the Canadian National Championships. Over the years, different companies have sponsored the tournament. Today, Rogers, a media company, is the main sponsor.

Canadian Players' Success

No Canadian male tennis player has won the men's singles since 1958. But in 2013, Milos Raonic made history. He was the first Canadian man to reach the final in the "open era" (since 1968). He beat another Canadian, Vasek Pospisil, to get there.

For women, Faye Urban was the last Canadian to reach the singles final. She won in 1969. Canadian players have done better in men's doubles. Daniel Nestor and Sébastien Lareau have both won titles.

In women's doubles, a Canadian pair hasn't won since 1969. That year, Vicki Berner and Faye Urban won. They beat another Canadian team. Since then, Helen Kelesi is the only Canadian woman to reach the doubles final. That was in 1990.

Past Champions

Many famous tennis players have won the Canadian Open. It's a very important tournament on the tennis calendar.

Men's Singles Champions

Some of the greatest male players have lifted the trophy here. Rafael Nadal won his fifth title in 2019. Other big names include Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Women's Singles Champions

The women's tournament has also seen many champions. Bianca Andreescu won in 2019. She was the second Canadian-born woman to win in the open era. Serena Williams has won this tournament three times.
