Roland is a town located in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It is part of the larger Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2020, the town had a population of 3,316 people. This was an increase from 3,169 people counted in 2010.

History of Roland, Oklahoma

In the 1800s, the area where Roland now stands was a spread-out rural community. It was part of the Cherokee Nation.

How Roland Became a Town

Things changed in 1888 when the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway (KAVR) built a railroad line through this area. People who lived nearby started to gather and form a small town. This new town was first called either Garrison or Garrison Creek.

In 1902, a post office was opened in the town. Two years later, in 1904, the town changed its name to Roland. By 1910, the town had 228 residents.

Roland is located in eastern Oklahoma. It is about 4 miles (6 km) east of Muldrow. The town is also about 6 miles (10 km) west of Fort Smith.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town covers a total area of about 2.7 square miles (7.0 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.6 square miles (6.7 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.10 square kilometers), is water.
