Rollands Plains is about 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of Sydney. It's also just 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of Port Macquarie. You can find it between the town of Telegraph Point and the beautiful Willi Willi National Park.

This area is part of the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. It's split into two main parts: Rollands Plains and Upper Rollands Plains.

First Peoples of Rollands Plains

Rollands Plains is on the traditional lands of the Dunghutti people. The Birpai people have also lived in this area for over 40,000 years, making it a place with a very long history.

What is the Economy Like?

Today, the main way people make a living here is through farming. In the past, cutting down timber was very important. After World War I, some parts of the area were cleared for "soldier settlements." These were farms given to soldiers who had returned from the war.

Local Facilities

Rollands Plains has several important community places. There is a school of arts hall, which is a place for community events. You can also find a cemetery, an oval for sports, and a Rural Fire Service station. The Upper Rollands Plains Public School is still open, but the smaller Rollands Plains Public School closed in the 1960s.

Natural Features

The Wilson River is a major natural feature of the area. It flows through Rollands Plains and eventually joins the Hastings River. The Wilson River starts near Mount Banda Banda, which is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west in the Willi Willi National Park. There are also several state forests to the north of the village.

What Does the Name Mean?

The name Rollands Plains comes from Captain John Rolland. He was the leader of the nearby settlement of Port Macquarie. In 1824, Captain Rolland became very sick while at sea. He sailed to Port Macquarie to get medical help, but sadly, he passed away. He was buried at the Church of St Thomas in Port Macquarie, which was being built at the time.
