Professional Cycling Career
Starting Out (2012–2013)
Bardet became a professional cyclist in 2012. He quickly showed his talent at the 2012 Tour of Turkey. In a tough mountain stage, he attacked many times and finished fifth. He also finished fifth overall in that race.
The next year, Bardet rode his first Tour de France. He also got his first professional win at the Tour de l'Ain.
Climbing to the Top (2014–2017)
2014: First Big Wins
Bardet won his first one-day race, La Drôme Classic, in 2014. He finished fourth overall at the 2014 Volta a Catalunya. He also rode his first 2014 Critérium du Dauphiné and finished fifth overall. In the 2014 Tour de France, Bardet was a team leader. He reached third place overall after two weeks. He even wore the white jersey for a short time. He finished sixth overall in the Tour.
2015: Tour de France Stage Winner
In 2015, Bardet was seen as a strong rider for the 2015 Tour de France. Before the Tour, he won a stage at the 2015 Critérium du Dauphiné. He attacked on a downhill section and then climbed to win the stage by himself.
During the Tour de France, Bardet lost time early on. But he kept fighting. On July 23, 2015, he won Stage 18 after a solo attack in the mountains. This was his first Tour de France stage victory! The next day, he wore the polka dot jersey for being the best climber. He finished ninth overall and won the combativity award for his fighting spirit.
2016: Second Place in the Tour
In 2016, Bardet finished second overall in the 2016 Tour of Oman. He also finished second overall in the 2016 Critérium du Dauphiné.
On Stage 19 of the 2016 Tour de France, Bardet attacked on a wet downhill. He rode away from the other top riders. He caught the leader and then rode solo to win the stage. This win moved him from fifth to second place overall. He finished the Tour in second place, which was a huge achievement for a French rider. He also raced for France in the Olympic road race.
2017: Another Tour de France Podium
In 2017, Bardet won stage 12 of the 2017 Tour de France. He made a strong attack near the finish line in the Pyrenees mountains. He finished third overall in the Tour de France, behind Chris Froome and Rigoberto Urán. This was his second time on the Tour de France podium!
2018: World Championships Silver
In 2018, Bardet won the Classic Sud-Ardèche. He also finished second in the tough 2018 Strade Bianche race, which has gravel roads. At 2018 Liège–Bastogne–Liège, he finished third, his first time on the podium in a "Monument" race.
In the 2018 Tour de France, Bardet had some bad luck early on. But he fought back in the mountains. He finished sixth overall in the Tour, his fifth time in a row in the top ten.
In September, Bardet won a silver medal at the Road Race World Championships. He attacked with other strong riders and finished second.
2019: King of the Mountains

Bardet started 2019 by finishing second overall at the 2019 Tour du Haut Var. In the 2019 Tour de France, he lost a lot of time on stage 14. This meant he couldn't win the overall race. But he then focused on winning stages from breakaways. He took the lead in the mountains classification and wore the polka-dot jersey for the rest of the race. This showed he was the best climber that year!
2020: Moving On
In 2020, Bardet finished second overall at the 2020 Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var. He had to stop racing in the 2020 Tour de France after a crash that caused a head injury. After this season, he decided to join a new team.
Team DSM (2021–Present)
In August 2020, Bardet signed a contract to join the Team dsm–firmenich PostNL team starting in 2021.
2021: Giro and Vuelta Success

Bardet raced in the 2021 Giro d'Italia for the first time. He slowly moved up in the overall standings. He finished seventh overall in the race. He also won a stage at the 2021 Vuelta a Burgos, his first win in over three years.
In the 2021 Vuelta a España, Bardet had some crashes early on and lost a lot of time. But he didn't give up! On stage 14, he joined a breakaway group. He rode alone to the finish line to win the stage. He also held the mountains classification jersey for a few days.
2022: Tour of the Alps Winner
Before the 2022 Giro d'Italia, Bardet won the overall title at the 2022 Tour of the Alps. This was his first overall win in a stage race since 2013. He had to leave the Giro d'Italia early because he got sick.
His next big race was the 2022 Tour de France. He finished in the top three on stage 11, which moved him up to second place overall. He finished sixth overall in the Tour de France that year.
2023: Consistent Finishes
In 2023, Bardet had many top-ten finishes in stage races. He was eighth overall at the 2023 Tour des Alpes-Maritimes et du Var and seventh at 2023 Paris–Nice. He also finished ninth at 2023 La Flèche Wallonne. He finished seventh overall at the 2023 Tour de Romandie and fifth overall at the 2023 Tour de Suisse.
2024: Another Tour Stage Win
Bardet started 2024 with a third-place finish in the Classic Var. In April, he finished second to Tadej Pogačar in 2024 Liège–Bastogne–Liège. He then raced in the 2024 Giro d'Italia, finishing ninth overall.
In late June, Bardet won his fourth career Tour de France stage. He held off the chasing group by five seconds on the very first day of the race.
