Roman Bürki was born on November 14, 1990. He is a professional football player from Switzerland. Roman plays as a goalkeeper for the Major League Soccer team St. Louis City SC. He also played for the Swiss national team from 2014 to 2018.

Roman Bürki's Club Career

Playing in Switzerland

Roman Bürki started his football journey in 2007. He played for the reserve team of BSC Young Boys. In 2009, he moved to FC Thun. Six months later, he joined FC Schaffhausen.

In the summer of 2010, he went back to BSC Young Boys. After another six months, he moved to Grasshopper Club Zürich. At first, he was a backup goalkeeper. But soon, he became the main goalkeeper for the team. He played there on loan until 2013. Then, Grasshoppers officially bought him.

Time at SC Freiburg

On May 24, 2014, Roman signed a contract with SC Freiburg. He became their main goalkeeper for the 2014–15 Bundesliga season. He played in all 34 games that season. However, his team was unfortunately moved down to a lower league, the 2. Bundesliga.

Playing for Borussia Dortmund

On June 14, 2015, Roman Bürki joined Borussia Dortmund. He played his first official game for them on August 15, 2015. Dortmund won that game 4–0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

In his first season, he played 33 league games. He managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in 12 of those games. During the 2016–17 season, he played 27 league games. He had nine games where he kept a "clean sheet."

In the 2017–18 season, Roman made history. He was the first goalkeeper to keep five clean sheets in the first five Bundesliga games. This means no goals were scored against him in those matches.

Moving to St. Louis City SC

On March 16, 2022, Roman Bürki agreed to a new deal. He would move to the Major League Soccer team St. Louis City SC. This team was new and would start playing in 2023.

Roman became the highest-paid goalkeeper in the league. He would earn a base salary of $1.5 million. In 2022, he played four games for the team's reserve squad, St. Louis City 2. On February 20, 2023, Roman Bürki was named the captain of St. Louis City SC.

Roman Bürki's International Career

Roman Bürki played for the Switzerland U-21 team. He was part of the 2011 European Under-21 Championship.

In 2014, he was first called to play for the main Swiss national team. He was also chosen for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. On November 18, 2014, he played his first game for Switzerland. It was a friendly match against Poland.

He was also part of the team for the 2016 European Championships. However, he did not play in any of the matches. His team was knocked out after losing to Poland in a penalty shootout.

In 2018, Roman was again chosen for Switzerland's team. He went to the 2018 World Cup. Later in 2018, Roman Bürki said he did not want to be called up for the Swiss team anymore. He wanted to focus on playing for Dortmund during the 2018–19 season.

Personal Life

Roman Bürki has an older brother named Marco Bürki. Marco also plays football as a defender for FC Thun.
