Romanenko finished high school in Star City in 1986. After that, he went to the Leningrad Suvorov military school and graduated in 1988. In the same year, he joined the Chernigov High Air Force School for pilots. He graduated in 1992 as a pilot-engineer. This means he learned to fly planes and also how they work.

Romanenko's Cosmonaut Career
Romanenko was chosen to become a cosmonaut in December 1997. He joined the Cosmonaut Office at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. From January 1998 to November 1999, he went through a basic training course. In November 1999, he officially became a Test Cosmonaut. This meant he was ready to go to space.
He also served as a backup commander for other missions. For example, he was the backup for Oleg Kotov on Soyuz TMA-10 and for Fyodor Yurchikhin on Expedition 15. Being a backup means he was ready to take over if the main commander couldn't go.

He was the third person whose parent had also been to space, following Sergey Volkov and Richard Garriott. Romanenko worked as a Flight Engineer on the ISS during these two long missions.
After spending 187 days and 20 hours in space, Romanenko returned to Earth. He landed on December 1, 2009, with astronauts Robert Thirsk and Frank de Winne.
