Roman is married to Yulia Leonidovna Romanenko. They have two children, a son and a daughter. When he's not flying in space or working in politics, Roman enjoys many hobbies. These include underwater hunting, playing tennis, fixing cars, traveling, sailing, playing volleyball, and listening to music.
Roman's Education Journey
Roman finished high school in Star City in 1986. After that, he went to the Leningrad Suvorov military school and graduated in 1988.
In 1988, he started at the Chernigov High Air Force School for pilots. He finished there in 1992. He became a pilot-engineer, which means he learned to fly planes and also how they work.
His Time as a Pilot
After finishing pilot school, Romanenko became a second commander in the Air Force. He flew different types of airplanes, including the L-39 and the Tu-134.
He has spent over 500 hours flying planes. This is a lot of time in the air! He is known as a Class 3 Air Force pilot.

On May 27, 2009, Romanenko launched into space. He was the commander of the Soyuz TMA-15 spacecraft. The launch happened from Site 1/5 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
He joined the crews of Expedition 20 and Expedition 21 on the International Space Station (ISS). He was a Flight Engineer, helping to operate the station. He was also special because he was a "second-generation" space traveler. This means his father, Yuri Romanenko, was also an astronaut!
Romanenko spent 187 days and 20 hours in space on this mission. He returned to Earth on December 1, 2009, with fellow astronauts Robert Thirsk and Frank de Winne.
Second Space Mission: Expedition 34/35
