Romancoke is a special area in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. It is called a census-designated place, which means it's a specific area defined by the government for counting people. Romancoke is located at the very end of Maryland Route 8 in the south.
The name "Romancoke" comes from an Algonquian word. It means "circling of the water," which makes sense because of its location. A person named William Claiborne, who helped start Kent Island, also had a large farm in Virginia called Romancoke.
Romancoke used to have a ferry service that connected it to Claiborne. This ferry was called the Romancoke-Claiborne ferry. However, the ferry service stopped on December 31, 1952. This happened just five months after the big Chesapeake Bay Bridge was opened. Today, Romancoke is mostly a place where people live in homes. It is also part of Stevensville's postal area.
