Ron Campbell (born 26 December 1939 – died 22 January 2021) was a talented Australian animator, director, and producer. He is most famous for his work on The Beatles TV show in the 1960s. He also helped create the amazing animated movie Yellow Submarine. Ron Campbell brought many beloved cartoon characters to life for millions of viewers.

Ron Campbell's Early Animation Career

Ron Campbell started his career in 1958. He began by animating different commercials for Australian television. Soon, he joined a big project when Al Brodax brought his `Krazy Kat` and `Beetle Bailey` cartoons to Australia. Ron was hired to work on these fun shows.

Directing The Beatles TV Series

After working on `Krazy Kat`, Ron Campbell became a director for many episodes of The Beatles television series. This show was made for King Features. It first aired on 25 September 1965. The show was super popular and stayed number one in the TV ratings for all four years it was on! Ron even wrote the introduction for a book called Beatletoons, which talks a lot about his work on the show.

Moving to Hollywood and New Cartoons

Because The Beatles show was such a huge hit, Bill Hanna (who co-founded Hanna-Barbera) hired Ron Campbell. Ron then moved to Hollywood, California, a famous place for movies and TV. In Hollywood, he worked on many other popular animated TV shows. These included The Smurfs, The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Scooby-Doo, Rugrats, Rocket Power, and Ed, Edd n Eddy.

Working on Yellow Submarine

In 1968, Al Brodax contacted Ron Campbell again. Al was in London, making `The Beatles'` full-length animated movie, Yellow Submarine. Al asked Ron and his friend Duane Crowther to animate many of the connecting parts in the film.

Together, Ron and Duane animated about twelve minutes of the movie. This was roughly one-seventh of the whole film! In his book about making Yellow Submarine, Al Brodax said that Ron Campbell really helped bring different parts of the movie together. Ron also shared his unique experiences in a book called Inside the Yellow Submarine, which tells the story of how the film was made.

Ron Campbell's Own Studio

In 1971, Ron Campbell started his very own animation company called Ron Campbell Films, Inc. The first project for his new company was a TV special for ABC called Nanny and the Professor. Ron also worked as an associate producer for this show.

He also produced and directed animation for two award-winning children's shows. These were The Big Blue Marble and Sesame Street. Both shows won important awards like the Emmy and Peabody awards. After this, Campbell worked on the popular animated series, The Smurfs.

Later Work and Retirement

In the 1990s, Ron Campbell joined Disney Animation. There, he worked on several well-known cartoons. These included Bonkers, Goof Troop, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Darkwing Duck. He also worked with Klasky Csupo for Nickelodeon. He helped create storyboards for shows like Rugrats, Rocket Power, and Duckman.

After a long and successful career, Ron Campbell retired. He lived in the Phoenix, Arizona area. In his retirement, he created original pop art paintings. These paintings were based on the movies and shows he had worked on. His artwork was sold through Scott Segelbaum's Rock Art Show. Ron often showed and sold his paintings in art galleries across North America.
