Ronald Rolston (born October 14, 1966) is an American ice hockey coach. He is currently an Associate Head Coach at Providence College. He used to be the head coach for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Rolston has also been a head coach for the USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. He worked as an assistant coach at several universities. These include Boston College, Harvard University, Clarkson University, and Lake Superior State University. He also coached the Rochester Americans, an AHL team.

On February 20, 2013, Rolston became the interim head coach of the Sabres. He took over from Lindy Ruff for the rest of the 2012–13 season. On May 7, 2013, the Sabres officially named him their 16th head coach. However, due to poor team performance, the Sabres let Rolston go on November 13, 2013. Later, on September 17, 2014, the Arizona Coyotes hired him as a scout. On June 18, 2015, the Coyotes promoted Rolston. He became the head coach of their AHL team, the Springfield Falcons.

Playing Career

Ron Rolston played ice hockey for Michigan Technological University. He played for three years. During his time there, he scored 32 goals. He also earned 68 points in 110 games.

Career Achievements

Ron Rolston has achieved many great things in his coaching career.

  • He led the Rochester Americans to the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2011-12. This was his first season with the team.
  • In 2011, he received the Bob Johnson Award. This award honors excellence in international competition.
  • He is the coach with the most wins in the history of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (NTDP).
  • He won three gold medals at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) U-18 World Championships. These wins were in 2005, 2009, and 2011.
  • During the 2010-11 season, his team won titles at the 2011 Five Nations Tournament and the 2010 Four Nations Cup.
  • He led the U.S. National Under-17 team to win the 2009-10 World Hockey Challenge. This was their first win since 2002.
  • In 2008-09, he guided the U.S. National Under-18 Team to first place. They won at the 2008 Men's Under-18 Four Nations Cup and the 2009 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament.
  • He also coached the U.S. National Junior Team twice. He helped them win a bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship.
  • His team also earned a silver medal at the 2007 IIHF U-18 tournament.

  • Rolston's teams at the NTDP have always reached the championship game. This includes the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the IIHF World Under-18 Championship. In four IIHF U-18 Championships, his teams won three gold medals and one silver medal.
  • In July 2011, the Buffalo Sabres hired him. He became the head coach of their affiliate team, the Rochester Americans, in the American Hockey League.
  • In February 2013, he was named interim head coach of the Sabres. This happened after Lindy Ruff was let go.
  • On May 7, 2013, he was officially named the head coach of the Sabres. He was with the team until November 13, 2013.

Family Life

Ron Rolston is married to Shannon. They have two children, Maeve and Ronan. Ron is also the older brother of former NHL player Brian Rolston.
