Where is Rosal de la Frontera?
Location and Surroundings
Rosal de la Frontera is in the southwest of Spain. It sits on the Iberian Peninsula, which is shared by Spain and Portugal. The town is about 219 meters (718 feet) above sea level. It is also very close to the Chanza River.
A main road, the N-433, goes right through the town. This road connects Rosal de la Frontera to the border with Portugal. The border is only about 3.8 kilometers (2.4 miles) away. Just across the border in Portugal is a village called Vila Verde de Ficalho.
A Look Back: History of Rosal de la Frontera
Ancient Times and Empty Lands
People have lived near the Chanza River for a very long time. There is evidence of people living here even in the Neolithic period, also known as the New Stone Age. You can find a megalithic stone circle called "La Pasada del Abad" near the town.
Later, during the Portuguese Restoration War, many small villages near the border became empty. People moved to bigger towns for safety. This left the border areas open for activities like smuggling and banditry. For example, a small settlement called El Gallego was left empty in 1642.
How the Town Was Rebuilt
Rosal de la Frontera was created as part of a plan to repopulate areas like Sierra Morena. The idea was to bring people back to these empty lands. A special rule in 1822 allowed provinces to create new towns.
The creation of Rosal was approved in August 1834. The first instructions for people to move there were given in 1838. By 1844, the village already had its own local government, called an Ayuntamiento.
The town was first named Rosal de Cristina. But after a big political change in Spain in 1868, known as the Glorious Revolution, its name was changed. It became Rosal de la Frontera, which means "Rosal of the Border."
