Martin's Station Fort
Rose Hill was once the location of an important frontier fort called Martin's Station. This fort was built by a man named Joseph Martin. He was an Indian trader and later became a general. He also explored the Powell Valley.
Martin first tried to settle in the Powell Valley, but he had to leave because of attacks from Native Americans. He returned in 1775 and built Martin's Station. This fort was made of six wooden cabins. They were built about 30 feet (9 meters) apart. Wooden fences, called stockades, connected the buildings. This made a strong defense.
However, the fort was abandoned the next year. This happened after more conflicts between the settlers and Native Americans. Joseph Martin later sold his large landholdings in Lee County. He owned about 25,000 acres (101 square kilometers) there.
Today, you can visit a replica of this fort. It is located nearby at Wilderness Road State Park.
