The Cumberland Mountains are a mountain range. They are part of the larger Appalachian Mountains in the southeastern United States. These mountains stretch from northern Tennessee up to West Virginia. They also cover parts of western Virginia and eastern Kentucky.

The highest point in the Cumberland Mountains is High Knob. It is located near Norton, Virginia. This peak reaches about 4,223 feet (1,287 meters) above sea level. The United States Geological Survey says the range is about 131 miles (211 km) long. It is also about 20 miles (32 km) wide.

The Cumberland Mountains are surrounded by several rivers and creeks. These include the Russell Fork, Pound River, and Powell River. Other waterways like Cove Creek, Tackett Creek, the Cumberland River, and Elkhorn Creek are also nearby. This mountain range helps form part of the border between Kentucky and Virginia.

The mountains got their name from the Duke of Cumberland from England. On the Virginia side of the mountains, you can find many limestone caves.
