Rose Mary Barton (born in Dublin on April 21, 1856 – died 1929) was a talented artist from Ireland. She was known for her beautiful watercolour paintings. Rose Barton loved to paint many different things, like:

  • Landscapes (scenes of nature)
  • Busy street scenes
  • Peaceful gardens
  • Portraits of children
  • Pictures that showed cities and towns in Britain and Ireland

Rose Barton showed her artwork in many important art societies. These included the Watercolour Society of Ireland (WCSI) and the Royal Academy (RA). She also exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and the Society of Women Artists. In 1911, she became a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS).

Today, you can see her paintings in public art collections. Some are in Ireland, like the National Gallery of Ireland and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane in Dublin. Others are in Britain, such as the Ulster Museum in Belfast.

The Life of Rose Barton

Rose Barton was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1856. Her father was a lawyer from County Tipperary, and her mother's family was from County Galway. Rose was taught at home and had modern ideas about society. She was also very interested in horse racing. She was a cousin to two other famous artists, Eva Henrietta Hamilton and Letitia Marion Hamilton.

Early Art Training

Rose started showing her watercolour paintings with the Watercolour Society of Ireland (WCSI) in 1872. This was when she was just 16 years old! In 1875, Rose and her sister Emily went to Brussels. There, they took drawing and painting lessons from a French artist named Henri Gervex. Rose also studied figure painting and figure drawing with her good friend, Mildred Anne Butler.

Becoming a Professional Artist

In 1879, Rose joined a local art group called the Irish Fine Art Society. After that, she went to London to study at the art studio of Paul Jacob Naftel. She learned a lot from Naftel, just like her friend Mildred Butler.

Rose began to show her work in bigger art shows. In 1882, her painting Dead Game was shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). Two years later, in 1884, she exhibited at the famous Royal Academy (RA) in London. She also showed her art at other galleries in London, like the Japanese Gallery and the Grosvenor Gallery.

In 1893, Rose became an associate member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. This was a big step for her. By 1911, she became a full member, which showed how respected she was as a watercolour artist.

Famous Works and Books

Rose Barton's watercolours, especially her city scenes, became very popular in both Dublin and London. Her art was featured in books about these cities. For example, she illustrated Picturesque Dublin, Old and New by Francis Farmer. She also created her own book called Familiar London, which featured her beautiful paintings of the city.
