The Story of Roseboro: How the Town Began

Roseboro started thanks to the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad. This railroad built a new line from Fayetteville to Wilmington between 1889 and 1890. As train depots were built along this line, new communities like Roseboro grew around them. These depots helped businesses grow and brought people together.

Roseboro officially became a town in 1891. This happened when the North Carolina General Assembly approved its incorporation. The first mayor of Roseboro was Almond Butler. E.R. Johnson was the town's first marshal. When the town first started, it had only a few houses and some general stores.

Roseboro's Oldest Building: A Look Back

The oldest building in Roseboro was built around 1897 by W.J. Fisher. This building has been used for many different things over the years:

  • In 1908, Dr. Paul M. Crumpler had his medical office there. Whit Tart also ran a drug store in the back, which was the start of Tart & West Drug Store.
  • In 1930, Paul and Sammy Butler opened a barber shop in the building.
  • In the 1950s, Willie Butler started a mortgage and finance company there.
  • In the late 1950s, Vander Simmons used it as an accounting office.
  • In 1961, Lennon H. Fisher, W.J. Fisher's grandson, opened Fisher Insurance Agency. It stayed there until 1978.
  • In 1989, Jim Buchanan opened a photography business, which later became Jim B’S E-Z Rental in 1990.
  • Today, Summerlyn Naylor, who is W.J. Fisher's great-great-granddaughter, runs a business in the building.

Historic Homes in Roseboro
