Rosemount is a city located in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. It sits on the southern edge of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. In 2020, about 25,650 people lived there.

History of Rosemount

Rosemount started as a township in 1858. It became a city in 1972. This new city included the old village of Rosemount and an area called Pine Bend.

There was a discussion about what to name the township. Some wanted to call it Saratoga. But Rosemount was chosen instead. This name honored the town's Irish heritage. It also matched the name of the post office that had been there for a few years.

In the 1940s, a military gunpowder factory called Gopher Ordnance Works was located in Rosemount. There was also a community called Rich Valley. It had a post office from 1858 to 1935. It also had a train station for the Chicago Great Western railway.

Geography and Location

Rosemount covers an area of about 35.21 square miles (91.23 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 33.22 square miles (86.13 square kilometers). The rest, about 1.99 square miles (5.10 square kilometers), is water.

Several main roads pass through Rosemount. These include U.S. Highway 52, Minnesota Highway 3, Minnesota Highway 55, and County Road 42. These roads help people travel in and out of the city.

Rosemount's Climate

Rosemount experiences a climate with warm summers and cold winters. The hottest month is usually July, with average high temperatures around 81.3°F (27.4°C). The coldest month is January, with average low temperatures around 3.3°F (-16°C). The city gets a good amount of rain, especially in the summer months like June, July, and August. Snowfall is common in winter.

In 2010, there were 21,874 people living in Rosemount. They lived in 7,587 households. About 46.5% of these households had children under 18. Most households were married couples living together. The average age of people in the city was 34.7 years old. Many residents, about 30.7%, were under 18.

Fun Things to Do

Rosemount might not be a huge city, but it has hosted the USA Broomball National Championships many times. This is a big event where teams compete in broomball. Rosemount hosted the championships in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005.

The city also has a special community festival called Leprechaun Days. This festival lasts for 10 days and includes many fun events for everyone.
