Discovering Rosen, Minnesota
Rosen is a quiet place with a rich history. It's located in the beautiful state of Minnesota. This community has a special connection to its church and the people who helped it grow.
How Rosen Got Its Name
The community of Rosen was named after a very important person: Father Peter Rosen. He arrived at St. Joseph's Church in 1895. During his time there, the church became officially recognized. Father Rosen had a great idea for the older people in the parish. He suggested they build homes and stores around the church. This way, they could live in the village when they retired from farming.
The Story of St. Joseph's Church
The first St. Joseph's Church was built in 1885. It was a wooden church, 40 feet long and 24 feet wide. It stood where the current church is now. In 1896, a new church, a rectory (where the priest lives), and a cemetery were built.
In 1907, the old church building was moved. A brand new, much larger church was built in its place. This new church was 100 feet long and 40 feet wide. It also had a tall tower, reaching 106 feet high! Building this impressive church cost $20,000 at the time.
A beautiful addition was recently made to the front of St. Joseph's Church. It's a grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This special monument, made of three granite leaves, was given by Rose Karels. It honors the early pioneers who helped start Rosen.
Learning at St. Joseph's School
St. Joseph's School was built in 1927. It cost $18,200 to build. For many years, children in Rosen learned and grew at this school. However, the last class was held there in the spring of 1979.
