Rosie's Early Life and Family
Rosie MacLennan was born in the township of King, Ontario. Her parents are Jane and John MacLennan. Rosie's grandfather was chosen to be a gymnast for the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. However, he could not compete because the games were cancelled due to World War II.
Rosie's Amazing Trampoline Career
Rosie MacLennan started competing in trampoline events around the world in 1999. She quickly became a top athlete.
Teaming Up for Synchronized Trampoline
In 2006, Rosie teamed up with her training partner, the Olympian Karen Cockburn. They competed in synchronized trampoline, where two gymnasts perform routines at the same time. Rosie and Karen were very successful together. They won eight World Cup events in a row, including the World Cup Finals in Birmingham in 2006.
In 2007, they won the synchronized trampoline event again at the World Championships in Quebec City. They even set a world record for how difficult their routine was! Their great results at the 2007 World Championships helped Rosie qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Competing at the Olympics
Before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Rosie came in second place at a special competition. This event was held to test the facilities for the Olympic Games. In June 2008, Rosie was chosen to represent Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She competed alongside Karen Cockburn and Jason Burnett. In the preliminary round, Rosie qualified in 3rd place for the finals. She finished in 7th place overall at those Games.
After the 2008 Olympics, Rosie continued to achieve great things. She won the Canadian Women's Individual title in 2009. She also earned bronze medals at the World Championships in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, she won the Canadian Championships again. She also took first place at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Rosie then earned a silver medal at the 2011 Trampoline World Championships. This win helped Canada secure a spot for women in the trampoline event at the 2012 London Olympics.
London 2012: Olympic Gold!
Rosie's next big competition was the 2012 Gymnastics Olympic Test Event. This event was held in the same place as the Olympics. Rosie won, showing she was ready for the big stage. In May 2012, she had a mild concussion, which meant she had to be careful with her training. She even missed the 2012 Canadian Trampoline Championships.
However, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Rosie performed her best routine ever. Her score of 57.305 won her the gold medal for Canada! This was Canada's only gold medal at those Games. It was also the first time a Canadian had won a trampoline gold medal at the Olympics. Rosie was surprised and thrilled by her win. Two Chinese competitors, who were expected to win, could not beat her score. Rosie's teammate Karen Cockburn narrowly missed a bronze medal.
World Champion and Overcoming Challenges
In November 2013, Rosie won another gold medal at the World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. In May 2014, she won the Canadian National Championship in Ottawa.
Before the 2015 Pan American Games, Rosie had another mild concussion. This happened when she landed on the side of a trampoline during training. Despite this, she still won the women's trampoline event at the Pan American Games just two weeks later. After the games, she took time to rest and recover from the concussion. She worked with a special therapist to help her balance and timing. By November 2015, she was back to doing flips.
Rio 2016: Defending Her Title
In 2016, Rosie won the Canadian National Championship in Edmonton. She was also chosen to be Canada's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics. On August 12, 2016, Rosie successfully defended her Olympic title. This made her the first Canadian to win two gold medals in an individual sport at the Summer Olympics. She was also the first trampolinist, male or female, to win two Olympic gold medals in a row!
Later Career and Retirement
