About Rosie MacLennan
Rosie MacLennan was born in King, Ontario. Her parents are Jane and John MacLennan. Rosie's grandfather was a gymnast too. He was chosen for the 1940 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Sadly, those games were cancelled because of World War II.
Rosie's Amazing Career
Rosie MacLennan started competing internationally in 1999. She quickly became a top athlete.
Early Success in Synchro
In 2006, Rosie teamed up with Karen Cockburn. Karen was also an Olympic trampolinist. Together, they competed in synchronized trampoline. This is where two gymnasts perform at the same time. They were incredibly good, winning eight World Cup events in a row! This included the World Cup Finals in 2006.
In 2007, Rosie and Karen won the synchronized event at the World Championships in Quebec City. They even set a world record for how difficult their routine was. Their amazing results helped Rosie qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
First Olympic Games: Beijing 2008
Before the 2008 Olympics, Rosie placed second in a test event in Beijing. This competition was held to check the Olympic venues. In June 2008, she was chosen to represent Canada. She joined Karen Cockburn and Jason Burnett on the Canadian trampoline team. At the Beijing Olympics, Rosie finished 7th in the finals.
World Championships and Pan Am Games
After the 2008 Olympics, Rosie continued to shine. She won the Canadian National Women's Individual title in 2009. She also earned bronze medals at the World Championships in 2009 and 2010.
In 2011, Rosie won the Canadian Championships again. She also took home a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Later that year, she won a silver medal at the 2011 Trampoline World Championships. This helped Canada secure a spot for women in the trampoline event at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Rosie also studied at the University of Toronto. She earned a degree in Physical and Health Education in 2011.
Olympic Gold in London 2012
Rosie's next big competition was a test event for the 2012 Olympics. She won that event, showing she was ready for the big stage. Just before the Olympics, she had a mild concussion. This meant she had to be careful with her training.
But at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Rosie performed her best routine ever! She scored 57.305 points, which won her the gold medal for Canada. This was Canada's only gold medal at those games. It was also the first time a Canadian had won gold in trampoline. Rosie was surprised and thrilled. Two Chinese competitors were still left to perform, but neither could beat her score.
More Gold and Overcoming Challenges
In November 2013, Rosie won another gold medal at the World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.
In May 2014, she won the Canadian National Championship. Before the 2015 Pan American Games, Rosie had another mild concussion. This happened when she landed incorrectly during training. Despite this, she still won the gold medal at the Pan American Games two weeks later! After the games, she took time to rest and recover. She worked with a therapist to help with her balance and timing. By November 2015, she was back to doing flips.
In 2016, she won the Canadian National Championship again.
Making History: Rio 2016 Olympics
Rosie MacLennan was chosen to be Canada's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics. This is a huge honor! On August 12, 2016, she successfully defended her Olympic title. This means she won gold again! She became the first Canadian to win two gold medals in a row in an individual sport at the Summer Olympics. She was also the first trampolinist ever to defend their Olympic title.
Later Career and Retirement
Rosie competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. She finished in fourth place. In December 2022, Rosie announced that she was retiring from trampolining.
