Roth is a tiny place in Bottineau County, North Dakota. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city. Roth is a very small rural area.
It's about 6 miles (10 km) west of a town called Souris. You'll find only a few houses in Roth. There are no stores or other services there.
Roth's History
Roth began in 1904. It was first named Faldet (or Faldot). It was a stop on the Great Northern Railway. In 1905, its name changed to Roth. This new name honored Martin Rothe, who was an important person at the railroad company.
The Name Mix-Up
The town was actually supposed to be named Carbury. Carbury is a town about 12 miles (19 km) to the east. But there was a mistake! Railroad workers or the Secretary of State mixed up the names. They put the wrong signs in the wrong places. The mistake was never fixed.
The Post Office
Roth got its own post office on May 22, 1907. But guess what? It was named Hewitt! In 1908, the new postmaster, John W. Reep, noticed the error. He made sure the name was changed to Roth. The post office closed on August 14, 1964. Now, mail for Roth goes through the Souris zip code, which is 58783.
Where is Roth Located?
Roth is in the Souris River Valley. This is a flat area near the Souris River. The town of Souris is located to the east of Roth.
Who Lives in Roth?
Roth is part of Scandia Township. In the year 2000, 54 people lived in Scandia Township. The United States Census Bureau does not count people in Roth separately. This is because it's an unincorporated community.
However, data from the 2000 Census shows that Roth itself had about 5 people. These people lived in 3 different homes.
