Carbury is a small, mostly empty place in Bottineau County, North Dakota. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government. You can find it along North Dakota Highway 14.
Carbury is very quiet today. The last time a population count was done in 2000, no one was recorded living there. Its post office closed in 1984. Now, mail for Carbury goes through the post office in Souris.
This small community also serves as a port of entry between the United States and Canada. This means it's a place where people and goods can officially cross the border.
History of Carbury
Carbury got its name from a village called Carbury in Ireland. It was started in 1901 as a stop along the Great Northern Railway. The first post office opened on April 16, 1906.
There's an interesting story about Carbury's name. It was actually supposed to be named Roth, which is a town about 12 miles (19 km) to the west. But because of a mix-up, the signs for the towns were switched. The mistake was never fixed! Carbury's original post office had the zip code 58724.
At its busiest in 1920, Carbury had about 50 people living there. By 1980, the population had dropped to just 5.
Long before the town was founded, Norwegian settlers from Polk County, Minnesota, created a settlement near Carbury in 1883. They were reportedly the first Norwegians to settle in Bottineau County.
