Rotten Island (which is An tOileán Bréan in Irish) is a small island located in County Donegal, Ireland. It sits near the entrance of Killybegs Harbour, which is a part of Donegal Bay.
The Lighthouse on Rotten Island
Rotten Island is well-known for its historic Rotten Island lighthouse. This lighthouse was built way back in 1838, making it very old! Even today, it still works and helps ships navigate safely.
The lighthouse has a special design. It features a tall, white, cone-shaped tower made of stone. At the top, there's a bright red gallery, which is the walkway around the light. The lighthouse is managed by the Commissioners of Irish Lights, an organization that looks after lighthouses and navigation aids around Ireland.

In the past, a few people did live on Rotten Island. Records show that in 1841, 11 people lived there. The number changed over the years, sometimes going down to zero. For example, from 1871 to 1901, no one lived on the island. A few people lived there again in the early to mid-1900s, but since 1961, the island has been uninhabited. This means it's a quiet place, mostly visited by lighthouse keepers or maintenance crews.
