History of Round Lake Village
The village of Round Lake started in 1867. It was first a summer meeting place for groups of Methodists. These meetings were called "camp meetings." At first, visitors stayed in tents. Ministers could rent rooms in the passenger station.
By 1868, more permanent buildings appeared. These included small houses called cottages. There was also an office for the leaders and a bookstore. A market was built too. The Round Lake Association owned and governed the village.
By 1881, the village started offering lectures. These were similar to the famous Chautauqua Institution programs. In 1887, George West built the George West Museum of Art and Archaeology. This museum helped make the village a cultural center.
A very old and large organ is in the Round Lake Auditorium. It is called the Ferris Tracker organ. It was built in 1847 for a church in New York City. In 1888, it was moved to Round Lake. This organ is still used for music shows today.
In the mid-1900s, fewer people were interested in the cultural activities. The Round Lake Association ended in the 1960s. The museum was taken apart in 1965. After the association closed, the village became an official village in 1969.

Their first firehouse was on Troy Avenue. They used a two-wheeled cart to carry hoses. Another cart with a bell would go ahead to warn people.
Today, the Round Lake Hose Company has two fire stations. They have eleven fire trucks and other equipment. About 65 volunteer men and women work there. They respond to emergencies in the village and nearby towns. They also have a special 1926 Childs fire truck. It is used in parades to show their history.
