Lord Ebbisham 1948
By Walter Stoneman, 1948

George Rowland Blades, 1st Baron Ebbisham (born April 15, 1868 – died May 24, 1953) was an important English politician from the Conservative Party. He was also a successful printer and even became the Lord Mayor of London.

George Blades was born in Sydenham, which was in Kent at the time. He went to King's College School for his education. In 1886, he joined his family's printing business, Blades, East & Blades Ltd. His grandfather had started this company. George worked his way up and eventually became the chairman of the company.

Serving the City of London

In 1913, George Blades was chosen to be part of the Corporation of London. This is the local government for the historic City of London. He served as the Sheriff of London from 1917 to 1918. During this time, he was given the title of Knight by King George V and Queen Mary. This happened when the King and Queen visited the City of London to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

Later, in 1926, he was elected as the 599th Lord Mayor of London. He held this important position for a year, until 1927.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

On April 23, 1918, George Blades also joined the London County Council. He represented the City of London for the Municipal Reform Party.

In the same year, 1918, he was elected to the Parliament. He represented the area of Epsom. He continued to be a Member of Parliament (MP) until 1928. He then left his seat in Parliament by taking a special position called the Stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds. This is a traditional way for an MP to resign.

From MP to Baron

George Blades received several special honors during his life. In 1922, he was made a Baronet. This is a title that can be passed down in a family. In September 1927, he was given another high honor, becoming a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE).

In 1928, he was given a very important title: he became a Baron. This meant he was raised to the peerage, which is a system of hereditary titles. He chose the title Baron Ebbisham. Ebbisham was an old name for the town of Epsom. He couldn't use "Baron Epsom" because that title was already held by someone else, the Earl of Rosebery.

His Love for Cricket

Beyond his work in politics and business, George Blades also enjoyed cricket. In 1921, he hosted a special dinner at the House of Commons. The dinner was for J. H. Mason, who was the captain of the Philadelphia Pilgrims cricket team that was touring at the time.
