The Rosebery Family's History
How the Title Began
Archibald Primrose, the first Earl, was the youngest son of Sir Archibald Primrose. Sir Archibald was a judge known as Lord Carrington.
Before becoming an Earl, Archibald was given other titles in 1700. These included Lord Primrose and Dalmeny and Viscount of Rosebery. In 1703, he also became Lord Dalmeny and Viscount of Inverkeithing when he was made an Earl. All these titles are part of the Peerage of Scotland.
Later Earls and Their Roles
Archibald's son, James Primrose, became the second Earl. Later, his cousin died, and James also inherited the title of fifth Baronet of Carrington.
Neil Primrose, the third Earl, was a Scottish Representative Peer. This meant he represented Scotland's nobility in the House of Lords from 1768 to 1784.
His son, Archibald John Primrose, became the fourth Earl. He was a member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, which is like a parliament. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire, a royal representative. In 1828, he received a new title, Baron Rosebery, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This new title meant he and his future family members would automatically have a seat in the House of Lords.
A Prime Minister in the Family
Archibald Philip Primrose, the fifth Earl, was the grandson of the fourth Earl. He was a very important Liberal politician.
He served as the Foreign Secretary twice. This role is like a country's top diplomat. He then became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895.
In 1911, he received even more honors. He was made Baron Epsom, Viscount Mentmore, and Earl of Midlothian. These were also titles in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Lord Rosebery married Hannah de Rothschild, who came from a very wealthy family.
Recent Earls
Their oldest son, Albert Edward Harry Primrose, became the sixth Earl. He was a Member of Parliament for a few years. Later, he served as Secretary of State for Scotland in Winston Churchill's government in 1945. He also led the National Liberal Party for a time.
Since 1974, his son, Neil Archibald Primrose, has held the titles as the seventh Earl.
The Heir to the Title
The person who is expected to inherit the earldom is called the heir apparent. This person is usually known by the courtesy title Lord Dalmeny.
The current Earl's son, Harry Ronald Neil Primrose, is the heir apparent. He is styled Lord Dalmeny. His son, Albert Caspian Harry Primrose, is the next in line.

The family's main home is Dalmeny House in Scotland. They also used to live at Mentmore Towers in England until 1977.
