Roy Carroll's Club Career Highlights

Playing for Hull City

Roy Carroll joined Hull City in September 1995. He started there as a trainee, learning the ropes of professional football. He played 50 games for the club in all competitions. After two seasons, he moved to another team.

Time at Wigan Athletic

In April 1997, Carroll signed with Wigan Athletic. He joined for a club-record fee of £350,000. He made his first appearance for Wigan in November 1997. Over four years, he played 170 games for the club.

He was a key player in Wigan's amazing 26-game unbeaten streak in the 1999–2000 season. Other professional players voted him the best goalkeeper in the second division that year. This was even more impressive because he missed the last seven games due to an emergency appendix operation.

In the 2000–01 season, he kept 13 clean sheets in 34 games. This helped his team reach the play-offs. In a play-off semi-final, he saved a penalty, but the rebound was scored.

Joining Manchester United

In July 2001, Roy Carroll moved to Manchester United. They were the defending Premier League champions. He made his first appearance for them on 26 August 2001.

At Manchester United, he competed with Fabien Barthez for the goalkeeper spot. Carroll won a Premier League winner's medal in the 2002–03 season. He faced more competition when Tim Howard joined the team.

Carroll also won an FA Cup winner's medal in May 2004. He came on as a substitute in the final.

The "Goal That Wasn't" Incident

In January 2005, Roy Carroll was involved in a very unusual moment against Tottenham Hotspur. A long shot from Pedro Mendes went towards his goal. Carroll dropped the ball, and it appeared to cross the goal-line before he scooped it back into play. The referee and his assistants did not see that the ball had crossed the line, so the goal was not given. This was a very memorable moment in football history.

He left Manchester United on 27 May 2005. He wanted to be the first-choice goalkeeper for the next season.

Playing for West Ham United

After leaving Manchester United, Carroll joined West Ham United. He had a good start, playing 19 games. However, a back injury in January 2006 required surgery. This meant he missed the rest of the 2005–06 season, including the FA Cup Final. He made 17 appearances in the 2006–07 season. He left West Ham on 25 May 2007, looking for more regular playing time.

Short Spell at Rangers

On 7 July 2007, Carroll signed a one-year contract with Rangers. He played only one game for them. This was a League Cup match against East Fife on 26 September 2007.

Moving to Odense Boldklub

On 17 August 2009, Carroll signed a three-year contract with Danish Superliga team Odense BK. He made his debut on the same day and kept a clean sheet. He was named the 2009 Superliga Goalkeeper of the Year in December 2009. This was voted by other goalkeepers in the league.

Playing in Greece: OFI and Olympiacos

In August 2011, Carroll signed a two-year contract with Greek team OFI. He played 16 times for the club and was highly thought of in Greece.

In January 2012, Carroll signed with Greek Superleague champions Olympiacos. His first game was in the Europa League. He came on as a substitute and saved a penalty with his very first touch for Olympiacos. His team won the game. In the next game, he played very well despite having a hamstring injury.

Carroll became the main goalkeeper for Olympiacos in the 2012–13 season. He played in his first Champions League game since 2005. He helped Olympiacos win many games and keep many clean sheets. He said he was happy living in Greece. Olympiacos won the league and cup twice while he was there.

Playing for Linfield

Carroll joined Linfield in 2016. He won several trophies with them, including the NIFL Premiership twice and the Irish Cup. After a serious knee injury in January 2019, he left the club in May 2019.

Later Career and Retirement

After a short time playing for FC Mindwell, Carroll returned to the Irish League. He signed for Dungannon Swifts in January 2021. He left the club at the end of the 2020–21 season to focus on coaching.

On 2 January 2023, Carroll made a surprise return to play for Ballinamallard United. This was the club where he started his career. His return lasted only 35 minutes because he got a hamstring injury. After the game, Carroll said he was officially retired from playing football.
