Roy Vickers grew up in several places in British Columbia, including Kitkatla, Hazelton, British Columbia, and Victoria. His family background is very interesting.

His Family and Heritage

Roy's father was a fisherman. He came from the Tsimshian, Haida, and Heiltsuk First Nations peoples. This means his family lines were traced through his mother's side.

Roy's mother was a schoolteacher. Her parents came from England. In the 1940s, she was adopted into the Eagle clan of the Kitkatla people. This made Roy also a member of the Eagle clan. His grandfather was a skilled canoe-carver from Kitkatla.

Roy's artwork shows his mixed heritage. His paintings often feature traditional art styles from the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. However, his work also has its own special look.

His Art and Important Gifts

Roy Vickers became very interested in Northwest Coast art. His work has been chosen as an official gift from British Columbia many times. These gifts were given to important leaders visiting Canada.

For example, in 1987, his original painting called A Meeting of Chiefs was given to Queen Elizabeth II. Later, in 1993, special copies of his print The Homecoming were given to Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin.

Artistic Advisor Roles

Roy Vickers has also shared his artistic skills in other ways. He was an artistic advisor for big events in British Columbia.

In 1994, he helped the architects and designers for the 1994 Commonwealth Games. For these Games, Roy also created more than 20 totem poles. These tall, carved poles are an important part of First Nations art.
