Rubén Aguirre Fuentes (born June 15, 1934 – died June 17, 2016) was a famous Mexican actor and comedian. He was best known for playing the character Profesor Jirafales. This role was in the popular 1970s TV show El Chavo del Ocho. Rubén Aguirre also appeared in another well-known TV show from that time, El Chapulín Colorado.

Early Life and Education

Rubén Aguirre was born on June 15, 1934. His birthplace was Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico.

Studying in College

In his book Después de Usted (which means After You), Rubén Aguirre wrote about his life. He shared that it was hard to find colleges in Mexico in the 1950s. Because of this, he moved to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. There, he studied at a well-known university called Escuela Superior de Agricultura "Hermanos Escobar". He studied to become an agricultural engineer. This means he learned about farming and how to make it better.

Working and Starting a Career

While in Juárez, Rubén Aguirre often crossed into the United States. He worked as a gardener in El Paso, Texas to earn money. It was also in Juárez that he started his career in media. He became a radio host and commented on bullfighting. He loved radio so much that he paused his studies. He traveled to Mexico City to get his official radio license.

After getting his license, he went back to Juárez. He started working as a radio host. He also met and married his wife, Consuelo de los Reyes. He finished his degree in agricultural engineering. Later, he moved to Monterrey, Nuevo León. This is where he began his acting career. He also met Roberto Gómez Bolaños, who would become a very important person in his life.

Acting Career and Famous Roles

When Rubén Aguirre first tried to become an actor, some people said he was too tall. He was 6 feet 5 inches! But despite his height, he started acting in Monterrey. He worked with a famous clown named Pipo. His acting skills caught the eye of Mexican producer Roberto Gómez Bolaños. Chespirito asked him to work in Mexico City.

Working with Chespirito

Rubén Aguirre moved to Mexico City. He worked on many TV show scripts with Roberto Gómez Bolaños. Chespirito was the creator and main star of two very popular shows: El Chavo and El Chapulín Colorado.

Aguirre became famous all over Latin America. This happened when both El Chavo and El Chapulín Colorado became huge international hits. The actors from these shows often traveled and performed together. Rubén Aguirre also traveled on his own. He visited places like Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Brazil many times.

The Professor Jirafales Circus

Chespirito owned the rights to El Chavo and El Chapulín Colorado. After Rubén Aguirre finished working on these shows, he moved to Argentina. There, he opened his own circus. Since Chespirito did not own the copyrights in Argentina, Aguirre could name his circus El Circo del Profesor Jirafales. This was a special way to keep his famous character alive.

Later Years and Passing

Rubén Aguirre passed away on June 17, 2016. He died from problems related to pneumonia. He was at his home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This was just two days after his 82nd birthday.
