A Look Back: Rubias's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to belong to Spain. After a big conflict called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed an agreement. This agreement was called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States.
After this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a place that belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Counting the People in Rubias
Soon after Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, the United States Department of War did a count of all the people. This count is called a census. In 1899, the census showed that 627 people lived in the Rubias barrio.
