The Rubicon Keys are two small islands located in the beautiful Biscayne National Park. You can find them just north of the upper Florida Keys. These islands are part of Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Where are the Rubicon Keys Located?
These two small islands are in the southern part of Biscayne Bay. They are located just north of Old Rhodes Key and Totten Key. You can also find them just east of the southern tip of Elliott Key. The Rubicon Keys sit on the south side of Caesar Creek. This creek is a waterway that separates Elliott Key from Old Rhodes Key.
How the Rubicon Keys Got Their Name
The Rubicon Keys were named a long time ago by early survey teams. These teams worked for the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. They named the islands after a famous story from ancient history. This story is about a Roman general named Julius Caesar. He crossed a river in Italy called the Rubicon River. Crossing this river was a very important decision. It meant he was starting a war.
The name "Rubicon" is used to mean a point of no return. It means making a decision you cannot go back on. The Bache Coast Survey first named these keys in 1861. The name was also shown on U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey chart #1249 in 1937.
