Rubin Collins Jr. (born October 19, 1953) is a former American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. Collins was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1974 NBA draft. He spent his professional career playing in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA).

Rubin Collins' Early Basketball Days

Rubin Collins grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Edison High School. Later, he moved to Washington High School in Princess Anne, Maryland. There, he helped his team achieve a perfect 19–0 record in the 1970–71 season. Over 40 colleges offered him scholarships to play basketball.

College Basketball Success

Collins played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. He played from 1971 to 1974. In his junior year (1973–74), he was the top scorer for the Hawks. That year, they won the MEAC men's basketball tournament. They also became the first men's basketball team from a historically black college to be invited to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Collins was recognized for his great playing. In 1974, he was named to the first-teams of both All-MEAC and All-NAIA.

Hall of Fame Honors

Rubin Collins was honored twice by the Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was inducted as a member of the 1973–74 NIT team. Then, in 2010, he was inducted individually for his achievements.

Rubin Collins' Professional Career

After his junior year, Collins applied to be eligible for the 1974 NBA draft. The National Basketball Association (NBA) approved his request. He was picked by the Portland Trail Blazers as the 38th overall player. Collins signed with the Trail Blazers on September 5, 1974. He attended their rookie training camp. However, he was released from the team before the season started.

Collins played one game for the Scranton Apollos. This team was part of the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) during the 1974–75 season. In 1975, he played with his former Hawks teammate, Billy Gordon. They played in the Urban Coalition League in Washington, D.C..

Playing in the EBA

Collins spent the 1975 preseason with his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. He was advised to try out for other teams. He signed with the Washington Bullets before the 1976–77 season. However, he was waived by them on September 30, 1976.

Collins then played for the Lancaster Red Roses in the EBA during the 1976–77 season. He continued to play two more seasons in the EBA. He played for the Washington Metros, Baltimore Metros, and the Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds from 1977 to 1979.
