Rubin Collins Jr. was born on October 19, 1953. He is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. Collins was chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1974 NBA draft. He spent his professional career playing in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA).

Early Life and College Basketball

High School Years

Rubin Collins grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He first went to Edison High School. Later, he moved to Princess Anne, Maryland, and attended Washington High School. In the 1970–71 season, he helped his team achieve an amazing 19–0 record. Because of his great skills, over 40 colleges offered him scholarships to play basketball.

Playing for the Hawks

From 1971 to 1974, Collins played college basketball for the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks. During his junior year in 1973–74, he was the team's top scorer. That year, the Hawks won the MEAC men's basketball tournament. They also made history by becoming the first men's basketball team from a historically black college to be invited to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Collins received special honors for his play. In 1974, he was named to the first-teams of both the All-MEAC and All-NAIA.

Hall of Fame Recognition

Rubin Collins' achievements were recognized by the Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Hall of Fame. He was inducted twice:

  • In 2004, as a member of the successful 1973–74 NIT team.
  • In 2010, for his individual contributions to the sport.

Professional Basketball Career

Joining the Draft

After his junior year, Collins asked the National Basketball Association (NBA) for special permission to enter the 1974 NBA draft early. He was then chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was the 38th player picked overall in the draft.

Collins signed with the Trail Blazers on September 5, 1974. He attended their rookie training camp. However, he was not kept on the team before the season started.

Playing in the EBA

Collins then played for the Scranton Apollos in the Eastern Basketball Association (EBA) during the 1974–75 season. He played one game for them. In 1975, he also played alongside his former Hawks teammate, Billy Gordon, in a league in Washington, D.C..

Before the 1975–76 season, Collins tried out for his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers. He was advised to look for other tryouts. He later signed with the Washington Bullets before the 1976–77 season. However, he was waived by them on September 30, 1976.

Collins continued his career in the EBA. He played for the Lancaster Red Roses during the 1976–77 season. He then played two more seasons in the EBA from 1977 to 1979. During this time, he played for teams like the Washington Metros, Baltimore Metros, and the Mohawk Valley Thunderbirds.
