Rudyard is a small community in Hill County, Montana, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a community that the government counts for population, but it doesn't have its own city government. In 2020, about 270 people lived there.

Rudyard started as a special stop for trains on the Great Northern Railway. This stop was used to switch trains from one track to another. The town's post office opened in 1910. Rudyard was named after the famous author Rudyard Kipling.

Where is Rudyard Located?

Rudyard is in the western part of Hill County, Montana. You can find it at these coordinates: 48°33′38″N 110°33′17″W / 48.56056°N 110.55472°W / 48.56056; -110.55472.

U.S. Route 2 is a main road that runs along the southern edge of Rudyard. This road goes east about 41 miles (66 km) to Havre, which is the main town of the county. If you go west on the same road, it's about 62 miles (100 km) to Shelby.

The area of Rudyard is about 0.92 square miles (2.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Unique Location: Antipodes

Rudyard has a very cool and unique feature! It's the only community in the contiguous United States (the main 48 states) that is directly opposite a non-oceanic landmass on the other side of the Earth.

This means if you dug a straight tunnel through the center of the Earth from Rudyard, you would come out on one of the Kerguelen Islands. These islands are in the southern Indian Ocean.

Getting Around Rudyard

Rudyard is on the BNSF train tracks. Amtrak’s Empire Builder train passes through the town. This train travels between Seattle/Portland and Chicago.

However, the train does not stop in Rudyard. The closest train station is in Havre. Havre is about 41 miles (66 km) east of Rudyard.

Rudyard is home to North Star High School. There is also a middle school located in Rudyard. Their sports teams are known as the Knights.

The North Star Elementary school is located nearby in Gildford.
