Rust is a Western film from 2024, written and directed by Joel Souza. It stars Alec Baldwin, who also helped create the story and produced the movie. Other main actors include Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins, Frances Fisher, and Travis Fimmel.
Before the film was finished, it became well-known because of a sad accident. In 2021, the movie's camera director, Halyna Hutchins, was accidentally shot and died. This happened when a prop gun fired a real bullet during a break in filming. Alec Baldwin was holding the gun. The director, Joel Souza, was also hurt in the shoulder by the same bullet.
After a pause, the people making the movie, including Alec Baldwin, decided to finish filming. Joel Souza later said he wished he had never started making the movie.
The finished film first showed at a festival in Poland called Camerimage on November 20, 2024. Rust was then released in movie theaters on May 2, 2025.

Movie Story: A Grandfather's Rescue
The story of Rust takes place in 1882 in Wyoming Territory. It follows 13-year-old Lucas Hollister, who is taking care of his younger brother, Jacob. Their parents had recently passed away.
One day, while chasing a wolf, Lucas accidentally caused the death of another boy's father. This boy had been bullying Jacob. Lucas was then sentenced to a very serious punishment. However, a stranger kidnaps him. This stranger turns out to be Lucas's outlaw grandfather, Harland Rust.
Journey to Mexico
Harland and Lucas begin a journey towards the US-Mexico border. They escape into New Mexico Territory. At first, they don't get along. But as they travel, they start to connect. They both understand what it's like to lose family members. Lucas lost his mother and father, and Harland lost his son and wife.
Meanwhile, several groups are chasing Harland and Lucas. These include Marshal Wood Helm and his team, bounty hunters like Fenton "Preacher" Lang, and even Kiowa Native Americans.
Escapes and Choices
Lucas and Harland have a close call with the Kiowa, but they manage to get away. Later, they are captured. However, they escape again during a shootout between the marshals and the bounty hunters. Everyone wants to capture them.
During a fight between Preacher, Wood, and Harland, Harland saves Wood's life by shooting Preacher. Harland then agrees to give himself up to Wood. But he has one condition: Lucas must be allowed to escape safely. Wood agrees because Harland saved his life and because it feels like the right thing to do.
Harland is badly hurt during the fight. Even though he is injured, he is still hanged. Lucas safely reaches Mexico. He goes to live with Jacob and their mother's aunt. It turns out this aunt was the one who planned for Harland to save Lucas. When Lucas arrives, he introduces himself as Lucas Rust and is later reunited with Jacob.

Making the Movie
How the Film Started
In May 2020, it was announced that Alec Baldwin would produce and star in Rust. The idea for the Western film came from a story he created with writer and director Joel Souza. Baldwin was excited to work with Souza. He compared the movie's script to the film Unforgiven (1992) and said it was based on a true story.
Baldwin mentioned his skills for the role, saying he was ready for gun-slinging and horse riding. He said, "They're always at the ready. I'm an actor of the old school. So if you read my resume—my motorcycle riding, my French, juggling, my horseback riding, my gunplay—is all right at my fingertips at all times."
Filming Paused
In October 2021, filming stopped because of a tragic accident. The camera director, Halyna Hutchins, was accidentally shot and died when a prop gun fired a real bullet. Alec Baldwin was holding the gun during preparation for a scene, and director Souza was also injured.
Filming finally started again in April 2023 and finished soon after. Rust was a special project for Baldwin, made with a budget of about $6–7 million. The film's rights were sold for $2 million before filming even began.
Filming Continues
In October 2022, the family of Halyna Hutchins reached an agreement, and it was decided that filming would continue. Halyna's husband, Matthew Hutchins, became an executive producer. Many crew members had different feelings about this. Some supported it and returned to work, while others decided not to.
Filming was delayed again in January 2023. In February 2023, it was reported that filming would restart in spring 2023. Joel Souza would direct, and Bianca Cline would be the new camera director. Grant Hill joined as a producer. The new filming location was Yellowstone Film Ranch in Livingston, Montana. The producers made sure that no real weapons or ammunition would be used.
Production of the film officially started again on April 20, 2023. On the same day, it was announced that Patrick Scott McDermott had replaced Brady Noon as Lucas. By May 2023, Jensen Ackles left the project due to other work, and Josh Hopkins joined the cast. Alec Baldwin returned to the set on April 24, 2023, to finish his scenes. The entire production wrapped up on May 22, 2023.
Movie Release
Rust had its first showing at the Camerimage festival in Toruń, Poland, on November 20, 2024. The movie was then released in theaters and for home viewing on May 2, 2025, by Falling Forward Films. It was shown in 150 movie theaters.
