About Ruth Buscombe Divey
Early Life and Learning
Ruth Buscombe Divey became interested in motor racing when she was 11 years old. She once said she wanted to be a princess, then an astronaut, and then work in F1. She looked up to famous Formula One engineers like James Allison and Paddy Lowe.
Ruth went to Forest School, Walthamstow. She really enjoyed math and solving problems. Some of her teachers tried to tell her not to become an engineer. They wondered why she wanted to work in a field mostly done by men. But Ruth followed her passion.
At 18, she went to the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. She studied Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering. For her master's degree, she researched how the drag reduction system works. She worked with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, which runs motorsport. Ruth finished her degree with top honors in 2012.
Ruth's Career in Formula One
After graduating, Ruth started working in Formula One right away. In 2012, she joined the Scuderia Ferrari team. She helped develop computer programs for race simulations. In 2013, she became a race strategist. She worked from Ferrari's main office in Maranello, Italy.
Ruth helped make important strategy decisions for drivers like Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen. She stayed with Ferrari until the end of 2015. Then, she moved to the new Haas F1 team in November. As their strategy engineer, she started working directly at the race tracks. She was often seen on the pitwall. In 2016, she also joined the "Dare to be Different" group.
Ruth's strategies helped driver Romain Grosjean finish in the top six in the first two races of 2016. These races were in Australia and Bahrain. She left Haas in June 2016. Three months later, she joined the Sauber team in September. Her first race with Sauber was the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix.
At the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, Ruth created a strategy that helped Felipe Nasr finish ninth. This important result helped Sauber move ahead of Manor Racing in the team standings. At the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix, her strategy helped Pascal Wehrlein finish eighth. This earned the team their first points of that season.
In early 2024, it was announced that Ruth would become a presenter for F1 TV. She had been the Head of Race Strategy for the Stake F1 Kick Sauber team. Her first appearance as a presenter was at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.
