Ruth Esther Pointer, born on March 19, 1946, is an American singer. She is best known as the oldest and last original member of the famous singing group, The Pointer Sisters.

Ruth Pointer's Musical Journey
Starting with The Pointer Sisters
Ruth joined her sisters in 1972. The group released their first album in 1973. Soon, they became famous with songs like "Yes We Can Can" (1973). They also had a country music hit called "Fairytale" (1974). Another popular song was "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)".
In 1977, her sister Bonnie left the group. The Pointer Sisters continued as a trio. They found even greater success. They sang rock, pop, and new wave songs. Some of their big hits included "Fire" (1978), "He's So Shy" (1980), and "Slow Hand" (1981).
Breaking Out with Hit Songs
The group's biggest success came in 1983. They released the album Break Out. This album had many hit songs. These included "Automatic", "Jump (For My Love)", and a new version of "I'm So Excited". Other popular songs were "Neutron Dance" and "Baby Come And Get It".
Ruth Pointer sang the lead vocals on "Automatic" and "Neutron Dance". Both of these songs reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Because of this success, the group won two Grammy Awards.
Movie Songs and New Members
In 1988, Ruth Pointer sang with Billy Vera. They performed the song "Enemies Like You and Me". This song was from the movie soundtrack for Iron Eagle II. That same year, Ruth also sang for the character Rita in the Disney film Oliver & Company. She sang "Streets of Gold" and a part of "Why Should I Worry" with Billy Joel.
In the 1990s, Ruth's daughter, Issa Pointer, joined The Pointer Sisters. In 1994, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This honored their amazing career.
Ruth on The Masked Singer
In October 2021, Ruth Pointer appeared on The Masked Singer. This is a TV show where celebrities sing in costumes. Ruth performed as "Cupcake". She later shared that she was supposed to sing with her sister Anita. However, Anita was ill, so Ruth sang alone.
A Lasting Legacy
Sadly, Ruth's sisters, Bonnie Pointer and Anita Pointer, passed away in 2020 and 2022. This means Ruth Pointer is the last original member of The Pointer Sisters still performing. Her voice and talent have been a big part of music history for many years.
Ruth Pointer's Family Life
Ruth Pointer has five children. Her oldest children are a daughter named Faun (born 1965) and a son named Malik (born 1966). Malik is also a singer. Ruth's daughter Issa Pointer (born 1978) has also performed with The Pointer Sisters.
In 1990, Ruth married Michael Sayles. In 1993, when she was 47, she gave birth to twins. They were a boy named Conor and a girl named Ali. Ruth's granddaughter, Sadako Pointer (born 1984), has also performed with the group. Ruth lives in Hopedale, Massachusetts with her husband.
