A Filmmaker's Journey
Ruy Guerra began his film studies in Paris at the IDHEC film school in 1952. By 1958, he started working as an assistant director on various French movies. Later, he moved to Brazil. There, he directed his first full-length film, Os Cafajestes (1962). This movie was even shown at the 12th Berlin International Film Festival.
Joining Cinema Novo
In 1964, Guerra directed Os Fuzis (The Guns). This film made him a key figure in the new Cinema Novo movement. This movement was a group of Brazilian filmmakers who wanted to make movies that showed real life in Brazil. Os Fuzis was also shown at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. It won a special award called the Silver Bear Extraordinary Jury Prize.
Films and Challenges
After Os Fuzis, Ruy Guerra directed Tendres Chasseurs (1969) and Os Deuses e os Mortos (1970). Brazil faced some political problems in the 1970s. This made it hard for Guerra to make films for a while. He returned to directing in 1976 with A Queda (The Fall). This film won the Silver Bear - Special Jury Prize at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival.
International Projects
In 1980, Guerra went back to Mozambique. There, he directed Mueda, Memória e Massacre. This was the very first full-length movie made in that country! While in Mozambique, he also made many short films. He helped create the National Institute for Cinema, which supports filmmaking.
Later, in 1982, Guerra filmed Eréndira in Mexico. This movie was based on a story by the famous writer Gabriel García Márquez. He also directed a fun musical comedy called A Ópera do Malandro (1985). Other films include Os Amores Difíceis (another story by García Márquez) and Kuarup (1989).
Recent Work and Acting
In 2000, Guerra's film Estorvo was nominated for the Golden Palm award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. This was his third time being nominated at Cannes. His 2004 film Portugal S.A. was the only movie he directed in Portugal.
Besides directing, Ruy Guerra has also acted in many films. Many people know him for his role as Pedro de Ursúa in Werner Herzog's movie Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972).
Personal Life
In 1971, Ruy Guerra married the Brazilian actress Leila Diniz. Sadly, she passed away the next year in a plane crash in India.
