Ruy Guerra (born August 22, 1931) is a famous film director and screenwriter from Portugal and Brazil. He was born in a city called Lourenço Marques in Mozambique, which is now known as Maputo. At the time of his birth, Mozambique was a colony of Portugal.

A Filmmaker's Journey

When Ruy Guerra was a young man, he moved to Paris, France, to study filmmaking. He started his career in 1958, working as an assistant director on French movies. This experience helped him learn how to make films.

Later, he moved to Brazil and began directing his own movies. His work became a key part of a new film movement called Cinema Novo, which means "New Cinema" in Portuguese. This movement was known for telling realistic stories about life in Brazil.

Famous Films and Awards

Guerra's first big film in Brazil was Os Cafajestes (1962). It was shown at the 12th Berlin International Film Festival, a major film event in Germany.

Two years later, he directed Os Fuzis (The Guns), which won a big award called the Silver Bear at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. This prize showed that his work was getting noticed around the world.

In the 1970s, making movies in Brazil became difficult because of political problems. Guerra had to take a break from directing. He returned in 1976 with the film A Queda (The Fall). This movie also won a Silver Bear award at the 28th Berlin International Film Festival.

Working in Africa and Mexico

In 1980, Guerra went back to Mozambique, the country where he was born. There, he directed Mueda, Memória e Massacre, which was the very first feature film ever made in Mozambique. He also helped start the country's National Institute for Cinema to support other filmmakers.

In 1982, Guerra directed the film Eréndira in Mexico. The story was based on a book by the famous writer Gabriel García Márquez. This film was nominated for the Golden Palm, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Acting Career

Besides directing, Ruy Guerra has also worked as an actor. One of his most famous roles was in the German film Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972). He played the character Pedro de Ursúa, a Spanish explorer.

Personal Life

In 1971, Ruy Guerra married Leila Diniz, a well-known Brazilian actress. Tragically, she died in a plane crash just one year later.
