Ryan Green's Football Journey
Playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers
Ryan Green started his football career as a young player with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He became a professional player in October 1997. Even though he had already played for his country, his manager kept him in the reserve team for a while.
Ryan made his first team debut on November 10, 1998. This was in a game against Sheffield United, which his team won 2–1. He played very well and was praised by local newspapers.
In January 2000, Ryan asked to leave the club because he wasn't playing as much as he wanted. His manager said that other players were preferred for his position. However, at the start of the 2000–01 season, Ryan got more chances to play. In October, he was sent off (given a red card) in a game against West Bromwich Albion. After this, he didn't start for the team again.
In early 2001, Ryan asked to leave the club again. He then joined Torquay United on a temporary loan. He played ten games there, helping them avoid being moved down to a lower league.
Time at Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday
On October 20, 2001, Ryan moved to Millwall for free. He made his first appearance for them on the same day in a 3–3 draw against Nottingham Forest.
In 2002, he almost joined Bradford City, but the move didn't happen because of money problems in football. Instead, he joined Cardiff City for a short time in November 2002. Two weeks later, he moved to Sheffield Wednesday. He left Sheffield Wednesday at the end of that season when they were moved down to a lower division.
Success with Hereford United
In August 2003, Ryan signed with Hereford United. On September 23, he scored his first goal as a professional player. It was a great goal that helped his team win 2–1 and stay at the top of the league. In December, he was sent off in a game against Tamworth. His team finished in the play-off spots but lost in the semi-finals.
Ryan played 26 league games in the 2004–05 season. He scored one goal in a 4–1 win against Northwich Victoria. Hereford United reached the play-off semi-finals again but lost.
In his third season with the club, Ryan scored in a 4–0 win against Scarborough. Later, he was sent off in a game against Tamworth. For the third year in a row, Hereford made it to the play-offs. They won their semi-final game and played in the final on May 20, 2006. In this important game, Ryan scored the winning goal in extra time, helping Hereford United win 3–2 and get promoted to a higher league!
Playing for Bristol Rovers
On May 31, 2006, Ryan signed a two-year contract with Bristol Rovers. He played his first game for them on August 5. Ryan played in 33 league games in his first season with Bristol Rovers. However, he got a foot injury in February 2007. Because of this injury, he missed the Football League Trophy final, which his team lost.
He returned to play in the final games of the season, helping his team qualify for the play-offs. After winning their semi-final, Ryan played in the final at Wembley Stadium on May 26, 2007. Bristol Rovers won 3–1, and Ryan helped them get promoted to a higher league.
Ryan faced more injuries, including a broken jaw and problems with his Achilles tendon. These injuries kept him out of play for a long time. His contract was not renewed, and he left the club on May 8, 2009.
Back to Hereford United
On June 5, 2009, Ryan Green rejoined Hereford United. He played for them until 2012. After the team was moved down to a lower league in 2012, Ryan was not offered a new contract.
Later Career Clubs
In August 2012, Ryan joined Welsh Premier League club Port Talbot Town. He played there for one season.
In June 2014, he joined Merthyr Town. He was the captain of the team and helped them win their league, which meant they were promoted to a higher division.
On September 14, 2015, Ryan signed with Hereford. This club was formed after Hereford United stopped playing. He played in the Midland League Premier Division. After a successful season where they were promoted, Ryan signed for another year in July 2016.
In September 2018, Ryan Green became a player-manager for Hereford for a short time. He looked after five matches. In December 2018, Ryan took a break from playing but stayed at Hereford as a scout.
On July 11, 2019, Ryan joined Westfields. In July 2020, he agreed to stay with the club for another year. However, two months later, he left the club because of his work outside of football.
In July 2023, Ryan Green, at 42 years old, rejoined Westfields.
Ryan Green's International Career
Ryan Green, who was born in Cardiff, played his first game for the Wales national team on June 3, 1998, against Malta. This was even before he played a senior game for a club! He was 17 years and 226 days old, making him the youngest player ever to play for Wales at that time. He broke the record held by Ryan Giggs.
Wales manager Bobby Gould then chose Ryan to play in a match against Tunisia. This was his second and last game for Wales. Ryan Giggs himself said that choosing Green was a "typical Gould stunt."
Ryan Green's record as the youngest Welsh international stood until Lewin Nyatanga broke it in 2004. Later, Gareth Bale held the record, and currently, Harry Wilson holds it. Harry Wilson was 16 years and 207 days old when he made his debut in 2013.
