Ryan Jack's Early Life
Ryan James Jack was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, on February 27, 1992.
Playing for Clubs
Starting at Aberdeen
Ryan Jack joined Aberdeen as a professional player in the summer of 2008. He had been part of the club's youth academy since he was eight years old. He played his first league game for the senior team against Rangers in September 2010 and quickly became a regular player.
In January 2011, Ryan scored his first goal for Aberdeen against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. This goal was even voted as the club's Goal of the Season for 2010–11. A week later, he played in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, where Aberdeen lost to Celtic.
Ryan signed a new contract with Aberdeen in October 2011. On December 13, 2011, during a Scottish Premier League match against St Johnstone, he scored an amazing goal from the halfway line! The opposing goalkeeper, Peter Enckelman, miskicked a clearance, and Ryan took advantage. Aberdeen won that game 2–1.
In June 2013, Ryan signed another three-year deal with Aberdeen. He played a very important part in Aberdeen's season, helping them reach the League Cup semi-final. However, he got injured in January and missed the semi-final. He recovered in time for the final, where he played for 120 minutes as Aberdeen won the trophy in a penalty shootout.
On January 11, 2015, Ryan was named SPFL Player of the Month for December 2014. On May 20, 2015, he extended his contract with Aberdeen until the end of the 2016–17 season. Then, on June 24, 2015, Ryan was chosen to be the captain for the 2015–16 season.
Ryan left Aberdeen in May 2017 when his contract ended. He had played 250 games for the Dons. His last game was the 2017 Scottish Cup Final, which Aberdeen lost to Celtic. Earlier that season, he also led the team in the League Cup final, which they also lost to Celtic.
Playing for Rangers
Ryan Jack signed a three-year contract with Rangers on June 1, 2017. He said it was an "honour and a privilege" to join the club he supported as a child. He played his first game for Rangers on June 29, 2017, against Luxembourgish team Progrès Niederkorn in the 2017–18 UEFA Europa League qualifiers. Rangers lost that match.
When Rangers first visited Aberdeen after Ryan's move, he was sent off for a bad tackle. This was his fourth red card in the 2017–18 season, though two of them were later cancelled. In January 2018, Ryan needed surgery on a knee injury, which kept him out of action for a while.
Ryan signed a new contract with Rangers in December 2018, which would keep him at the club until the end of the 2020–21 season. On December 29, he scored his first goal for Rangers in the Old Firm derby against Celtic, a game Rangers won 1–0. In October 2019, he signed another new four-year contract.
Ryan helped Rangers win the 2020–21 Scottish Premiership, which was their first league championship since 2011. Later that season, he had a calf injury that needed surgery. He returned to the team in November 2021. He scored the first goal in the 2022 Scottish Cup final, helping Rangers beat Hearts 2–0 after extra time. This happened three days after Rangers lost the 2022 UEFA Europa League final to Eintracht Frankfurt in a penalty shootout.
Ryan signed a one-year contract extension with Rangers in May 2023. However, he missed a lot of the next season due to injuries and left the club for free in June 2024.
Playing for Esenler Erokspor
In September 2024, Ryan Jack joined the Turkish team Esenler Erokspor.
International Career for Scotland
Ryan Jack has played for Scotland at different youth levels, including Under-16, Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21. He even captained the Under-21 team and is one of the top ten players for appearances at that level. In May 2013, he was called up to the senior Scotland squad for a game against Croatia.
Ryan finally made his full Scotland debut in a friendly match against the Netherlands in November 2017. This game took place in Aberdeen, and some fans booed him because of the rivalry between the clubs and his transfer. However, other fans cheered and clapped for him.
Ryan made his first competitive start for Scotland in November 2019. He helped Scotland qualify for UEFA Euro 2020, but he missed the tournament due to a calf injury. He was chosen for the Scotland squad for UEFA Euro 2024, even though he hadn't played many club matches before the tournament. He did not play in Germany, and the team was eliminated in the group stage.
In August 2024, he was not included in the Scotland team for Nations League matches against Portugal and Poland.
