Ryan's Hockey Journey

Starting in Junior Hockey

Before becoming a professional player, Ryan played junior hockey. He was part of the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Ryan first played in the WHL on March 8, 2006. He was only 16 years old then. That game was against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

In 2009, Ryan had a great streak of six games. He scored points in every game from October 30 to November 14. During this time, he got 11 points, including 3 goals and 8 assists. On December 11, 2009, he helped his team win big. He made four assists in an 11–2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Ryan was the top defenseman for the Moose Jaw Warriors in the 2009-10 season. He scored 40 points, with 10 goals and 30 assists.

Becoming a Professional Player

On March 12, 2010, Ryan signed his first professional contract. He joined the Chicago Blackhawks as an undrafted free agent. This means no team picked him in the draft, but the Blackhawks still wanted him.

Ryan played for the Rockford IceHogs, which is the Blackhawks' minor league team. They play in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played his first game for the IceHogs on March 6, 2010. It was a 3-1 win against the Houston Aeros. Ryan got his first AHL point on March 10, 2010. It was an assist in a game against the San Antonio Rampage. His first professional goal came on February 23, 2011.

For the 2010–11 season, Ryan was named the IceHogs' Most Improved Player. In the 2012–13 season, he played his first game in the NHL. This was with the Chicago Blackhawks on April 27, 2013. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup that season. However, Ryan did not play enough games to have his name on the Cup.

Moving to Other Teams

Before the 2013–14 season, the Vancouver Canucks claimed Ryan. This happened on September 30, 2013. He scored his first NHL goal on October 17, 2013. He scored against Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres.

After playing two seasons with the Canucks, Ryan signed with the Washington Capitals. This was on July 24, 2015. He signed a one-year contract.

Next, Ryan signed with the Colorado Avalanche. He played some pre-season games with them. Then, he was sent to their AHL team, the San Antonio Rampage. He played his first game for the Rampage on October 15, 2016. After 15 games, Ryan was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He then played for their AHL team, the Cleveland Monsters. He finished the season with the Monsters, playing 33 games.

On July 1, 2017, Ryan signed a two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. He was sent to their AHL team, the Bakersfield Condors, on October 31. He spent the rest of his contract playing for the Condors.

After his time with the Oilers, Ryan signed with the Ontario Reign in the AHL. This was on July 29, 2019. In the 2019–20 season, he played 36 games. His season was cut short due to an injury and the COVID-19 pandemic.

On September 16, 2020, Ryan returned to the Bakersfield Condors. He signed a one-year contract with them. On August 4, 2021, he went back to his first AHL team, the Rockford IceHogs.

Playing in Europe

On July 15, 2022, Ryan signed his first contract to play hockey outside North America. He joined the German team Kölner Haie in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). After one season in Germany, Ryan moved to the ICEHL league. On April 19, 2023, he joined the Italian team HC Pustertal Wölfe.
