Becoming a Professional Player

Ryan played for the Rockford IceHogs, which is the Blackhawks' minor league team. They play in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played his first game for the IceHogs on March 6, 2010. It was a 3-1 win against the Houston Aeros. Ryan got his first AHL point on March 10, 2010. It was an assist in a game against the San Antonio Rampage. His first professional goal came on February 23, 2011.

The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup that season. However, Ryan did not play enough games to have his name on the Cup.

He played his first game for the Rampage on October 15, 2016. After 15 games, Ryan was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He then played for their AHL team, the Cleveland Monsters. He finished the season with the Monsters, playing 33 games.
On July 1, 2017, Ryan signed a two-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers. He was sent to their AHL team, the Bakersfield Condors, on October 31. He spent the rest of his contract playing for the Condors.
