How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. From that point on, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government wanted to know how many people lived in Puerto Rico. They did a special count called a census. This first census showed that 1,095 people lived in the Río Cañas Abajo barrio.
