Río Cañas Arriba is a small community, also known as a "barrio," located in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,354 people lived there. It is part of the larger Mayagüez area in Puerto Rico.

History of Río Cañas Arriba
Becoming a U.S. Territory
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Río Cañas Arriba and a nearby area called Naranjales had a combined population of 1,048 people.
