Sávio's Club Career Highlights
Starting Out: Flamengo and Real Madrid
Sávio was born in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil. He began his football journey in the youth team of Desportiva Capixaba. As a young player, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to join Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.
He made his first professional appearance for Flamengo. Fans and the media thought he could be the next Zico, a famous Brazilian player. This was because Sávio was very skilled, even though he had a small build.
In 1995, Flamengo celebrated its 100th birthday. Sávio played alongside famous players like Romário and Edmundo. After some disagreements with Romário, Sávio moved to Real Madrid in 1998.
Success with Real Madrid
Sávio helped Real Madrid, a top team in La Liga, win many important titles. They won the UEFA Champions League three times. He also helped them win the Spanish national championship in the 2000–01 season.
During the 2002–03 season, Sávio played on loan for a French team called FC Girondins de Bordeaux. He also has French citizenship.
Playing for Zaragoza and Returning to Flamengo
After his time in France, Sávio went back to Spain. He joined Real Zaragoza and became one of their most important players for three years. In his first year there, 2003–04, Zaragoza won the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup). They even beat Real Madrid in the final!
In his second year with Zaragoza, 2004–05, Sávio scored ten goals in the league. This was his best scoring year in the league.
In May 2006, Sávio returned to Brazil and rejoined Flamengo. He signed a contract until December 2007. However, in January 2007, he moved back to Spain to play for Real Sociedad. He played his first game for them on January 21 against Valencia CF.
Later that year, after Real Sociedad was moved to a lower league, Sávio joined Levante UD. He played there until January of the next year. He left, like many other players, because they were not being paid.
Later Years in Football
After playing for his first club, Desportiva Capixaba, in Brazil, Sávio signed with a Cypriot team called Anorthosis Famagusta FC in August 2008. He even played for them in the 2008–09 UEFA Champions League, which is a very big European competition.
In January 2010, Sávio, who was 36 years old, returned to Brazil. He joined Avaí Futebol Clube. After a few months with the club, Sávio decided to retire from football at the end of 2010.
Sávio's International Career
Sávio played for the Brazilian national team. He was never part of a FIFA World Cup team. However, he did play for Brazil in the 1995 Copa América. In that tournament, Brazil lost the final to Uruguay after a penalty shootout.
