Early Life and Education
Sheikh Saad was born in 1930. He was part of the Al-Sabah family, which rules Kuwait. His father, Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, was the ruler of Kuwait from 1950 to 1965.
Sheikh Saad went to the Mubarakiya school in Kuwait. He also studied at the Hendon Police College in North London, England. This education helped him prepare for his future roles in government and security.
Important Roles in Government
Sheikh Saad began his career in important leadership positions. In 1962, he became the first military officer to lead the Ministry of Interior. Two years later, in 1964, he also took charge of the Ministry of Defense.
From 1961 to 1962, he was the general commander of the Public Security Force and the Police. He held both the Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense roles until 1978.
On 16 February 1978, Sheikh Saad became the Crown Prince of Kuwait. This meant he was next in line to become the Emir. He held this important position until 2006. From 1978 to 2003, he also served as the Prime Minister of Kuwait. This made him the head of the government.
Leading During the First Gulf War
Sheikh Saad was a key leader during the First Gulf War. He played a very important part in helping to free Kuwait from Saddam Hussein's rule. He refused to make any deals with Iraq that would put Kuwait's safety at risk.
When the Emir, Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was in exile, Sheikh Saad was briefly appointed as the military governor. This was from 1991 to 1992, during a very difficult time for Kuwait.
Becoming Emir of Kuwait
Sheikh Saad had some health problems, which made people wonder if he would become Emir. However, he officially became the Emir on 15 January 2006, after Sheikh Jaber passed away.
At Sheikh Jaber's funeral, Sheikh Saad used a wheelchair. His ongoing health issues led some people to question if he could lead the country effectively. Members of the Kuwaiti parliament were concerned he might not be able to say the oath of office.
On 24 January 2006, the Kuwaiti parliament voted to remove Sheikh Saad from office. This happened just before he sent an official letter saying he would step down. The Kuwait Cabinet then chose the Prime Minister, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, to become the new Emir.
