About Saado's Life
Saado Ali Warsame was born in 1950 in a town called Buuhoodle in Somalia. She grew up in a family that moved from place to place with their animals, which is called a nomadic family. Her family belonged to the Dhulbahante clan.
In the early 1990s, a civil war started in Somalia. Because of this, Saado moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the United States. She also lived for a while in St. Cloud.
In 2012, Saado decided to move back to Somalia. She wanted to help her country by working in the new Federal Government in Mogadishu.
Saado's Career
Her Music Journey
Saado Ali Warsame was a very important person in traditional Somali music. Her songs often talked about fairness, social issues, and love for her country. She was good at using clever ways to share her messages. She used things like satire (making fun of something to show a point), metaphor (using one thing to represent another), and historical allusions (referring to past events). This helped her explain difficult ideas in a way that people could understand.
One of Saado's songs, "Laand Karuusar," criticized leaders who stole money from the government. She also sang about how two fancy hotels in Mogadishu, built with public money, were falling apart because of bad management. Saado was also part of a long series of poems called "Deelley." In these poems, she spoke up for people from the northern parts of Somalia. She felt they were being treated unfairly by the government in the south.
After the civil war began in the 1990s, Saado's songs focused on national identity. She encouraged people to help rebuild the country after the conflict. Her song "Aan kuu Taliyo" playfully made fun of politicians who argued too much. Saado also supported a former leader, Muhammad Ali Samatar, when he faced a lawsuit in 2009. She believed he was being unfairly blamed for things that happened when he was in power.
Saado also shared her strong opinions about Somaliland. Her song "Libdhimeyside Laas Caanood, Laba maahaa Waddankeennu" is a good example. It praises the city of Las Anod. This city was captured by Somaliland troops in 2007. Saado's song highlights Las Anod's important history as the birthplace of the Dervish movement, which fought against colonial rule. The song's title means, "Oh Las Anod, you will always be part of Somalia, Our country is one."
Serving in Parliament
In 2012, after the Federal Parliament of Somalia was created, Saado moved to the capital city, Mogadishu. She became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the new government. She represented the Puntland region of Somalia.
Sadly, on July 23, 2014, Saado Ali Warsame and her driver were attacked and killed in Mogadishu. They were on their way to a hotel. A group called Al-Shabaab said they were responsible for the attack. They stated it was part of their plan to target Somali lawmakers. Many important people and groups spoke out against this terrible act. These included the President of Somalia, the Prime Minister, the UN Special Representative for Somalia, and officials from Germany and the U.S. They all sent their condolences to Saado's family. Somali-American community leaders in Minnesota also asked for a full investigation into her death. The Prime Minister promised that those responsible would be caught. In April 2015, two Al-Shabaab members were found guilty and later executed for killing Saado and other government officials.
On July 24, 2014, the Somali government held a special funeral for Saado Ali Warsame. It took place at the presidential compound in the capital. The President, Prime Minister, Parliament Speaker, and many other government officials, artists, and friends attended the service. Prayers were said, and Saado was buried in a cemetery in Mogadishu.

In 2011, Saado Ali Warsame received a special award for her life's work. This Lifetime Achievement Award was given to her by fellow Somalis Hodan Nalayeh and Hassan Abdillahi "Karate" at an event in Toronto.
