A Look Back: Sabana Abajo's History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
How Many People Lived Here?
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that only 578 people lived in the Sabana Abajo barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Sabana Abajo has changed a lot.
