History of Sabaneta
This town was started in 1844 by a person named Santiago Rodríguez Masagó and two brothers, Alejandro and José Bueno. The city was built in the middle of a small, open grassy area. In Spanish, this kind of area is called a sabaneta.
In 1854, Sabaneta became a "Military Post." This meant it was an important place for soldiers. A few years later, in 1858, it officially became a municipality. This made it a local government area within the Santiago province.
Sabaneta was a key location during the Dominican Restoration War (1863–1865). This was a big fight against the Spanish soldiers.
Later, in 1879, a new province called Monte Cristi was created. San Ignacio de Sabaneta became a municipality in this new province. Finally, in 1948, the Santiago Rodríguez province was formed. San Ignacio de Sabaneta was then made the main city, or "head municipality," of this new province.
