Sachal Sarmast, also known as Sacho Sarmast, was a very famous Sufi poet from Sindh, a region in what is now Pakistan. He lived a long time ago, from 1739 to 1827. His real name was Abdul Wahab Farooqi. He is remembered for his beautiful poetry and his deep spiritual ideas.
Sachal Sarmast's Life
Sachal Sarmast was born in 1739 in a place called Daraza, near Ranipur. This area is in Sindh. He lived during the time of the Kalhoro and Talpur rulers.
He was a Sunni Sufi Muslim. Sufism is a spiritual path within Islam that focuses on finding a close connection with God. Sachal Sarmast wrote many poems that shared his spiritual thoughts.
He was amazing because he wrote poetry in seven different languages! These included Sindhi, Saraiki, Persian, Urdu, Balochi, Punjabi, and Arabic.
People believe that he was a descendant of Umar, who was the second leader (Caliph) of Sunni Islam. One of his important collections of poems is called Sache jo Risalo, which means "The Message of the Truthful."
Remembering Sachal Sarmast
Every year, a special three-day festival is held to remember Sachal Sarmast. This festival is called an urs, and it celebrates the anniversary of his passing.
The urs takes place at Daraza Sharif, starting on the 13th day of Ramazan. During this time, people gather for a literary conference where they discuss his writings. There are also musical concerts where his poetry is sung.
