History of Saddle Rock
The land where Saddle Rock is now was first home to the Matinecock Native Americans. European settlers arrived in the 1600s. The village gets its name from a large rock offshore. This rock looks like a saddle and was first drawn on a map in 1658.
The Historic Grist Mill
Saddle Rock is famous for its old mill, called the Saddle Rock Grist Mill. It was built around the year 1700. This mill sits in a small cove that opens into Little Neck Bay. The mill is special because it is the oldest working tidal grist mill in the United States. A tidal mill uses the ocean's tides to power its machinery.
Today, the mill is owned by Nassau County. It works as a museum where people can visit and learn. The mill has been restored to look like it did in the mid-1800s. You can find it on Grist Mill Lane.
Early Leaders of Saddle Rock
The first Mayor of Saddle Rock was Roswell Eldridge. He became "Acting Mayor" after he made his private estate into the Village of Saddle Rock in 1911.
In 1926, Roswell's wife, Louise Udall Skidmore Eldridge, became the first official female Mayor of Saddle Rock. She was also believed to be the first female Mayor in all of New York State! Louise Eldridge was Mayor from 1926 until she passed away in 1947. She was also the last person to privately own the historic grist mill.
