Safed Old Jewish Cemetery facts for kids
The Safed Old Jewish Cemetery is one of the oldest and most important cemeteries in Israel. For hundreds of years, people have been buried here, including many important Jewish religious leaders and famous figures. This historic cemetery is found on the western side of Safed, on the slope of Mount Canaan, close to the Amud River.

Exploring the Safed Cemetery
The Safed Old Jewish Cemetery is a special place with different sections. It tells stories from many years ago.
The New Cemetery Area
Just below the ancient Safed Old Jewish Cemetery, you will find the New Safed Cemetery. This area is also used for burials today.
Rabbi Isaac Luria's Mikveh
Near the entrance to the cemetery, there is an ancient Mikveh. A mikveh is a special pool used for ritual washing. This particular one was used by a very famous Jewish leader named Rabbi Isaac Luria. His grave is also located close by, making this a significant spot for visitors.
The Military Cemetery
To the north of the Safed Old Jewish Cemetery, there is a Military Cemetery. This section has been used since 1948 to honor and bury soldiers.
Monument to the Olei Hagardom
On the slope of Mount Canaan, below the Military Cemetery, stands a special monument. It is called the Central Monument to the Olei Hagardom. This monument remembers brave people who were executed for their efforts to help create the State of Israel.
