Safra Ada Catz (Hebrew: צפרא עדה כץ; born in December 1961) is a very successful businesswoman in the technology world. She is from Israel and also an American citizen. She is currently the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Oracle Corporation. The CEO is the highest-ranking person in a company.
Safra Catz has worked at Oracle since April 1999. She became a member of the company's board of directors in 2001. A board member helps guide the company's decisions. In 2011, she became a co-president and the chief financial officer (CFO). The CFO manages the company's money. In 2014, she became a joint CEO with Mark Hurd. Later, in 2019, she became the only CEO of Oracle.
Early life
Safra Catz was born in December 1961 in Holon, Israel. Her family is Jewish. When she was six years old, she moved with her family to Brookline, Massachusetts in the United States.
She finished high school at Brookline High School. She then went to the University of Pennsylvania. In 1983, she earned a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School. Later, in 1986, she earned a law degree (called a J.D.) from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Career highlights
Before joining Oracle, Safra Catz worked as a banker. She held important roles at a company called Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette from 1986 to 1999.
In April 1999, Safra Catz started working at Oracle Corporation. She quickly moved up in the company. In 2001, she joined Oracle's board of directors. In 2004, she became the president of the company.
She played a big part in Oracle buying another software company, PeopleSoft, in 2005. This was a very large deal, costing $10.3 billion. She also served as Oracle's CFO for several years.
Safra Catz is often recognized as one of the most powerful women in business. Fortune and Forbes magazines have ranked her highly on their lists. For example, in 2023, she was ranked 17th by Forbes. She has also been one of the highest-paid female CEOs in the United States.
Besides her work at Oracle, Safra Catz has taught accounting at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She also served on the board of directors for HSBC, a large bank, from 2008 to 2015. In 2017, she was elected to the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company.
In March 2022, she was chosen to be part of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. This council advises the Secretary of Homeland Security on important security matters. In 2023, Fortune magazine ranked her 11th on their list of Most Powerful Women.
Political involvement
Safra Catz has also been involved in politics. During the 2016 presidential election, she supported Marco Rubio's campaign. After Donald Trump won the election in 2016, she was part of his team that helped him prepare to become president.
During this time, some news outlets suggested she might be chosen for a job in the new government. These possible roles included Director of National Intelligence or United States Trade Representative.
In 2018, her name was mentioned as a possible replacement for the National Security Advisor. She has also donated money to Republican political groups and individuals. In 2020, she and her husband gave money to Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
Personal life
Safra Catz is married to Gal Tirosh, who used to be a soccer coach. They got married in 1997. They have two sons together. She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
