History of Sagaponack
Early Settlement and Name Origin
People first started settling in the Sagaponack area around 1653. The village's name, Sagaponack, comes from the Shinnecock Native American language. It means "land of the big ground nuts," referring to a plant called the Ground Nut (Apios americana). Many people used to think the name was about potatoes, which were a main crop grown by early farmers. In fact, many large homes in the village today are built on what used to be potato fields. The first settler was Josiah Stanborough in 1656. The village was originally known as Sagg.
The nearby town of Sag Harbor is thought to have gotten its name from Sagaponack.
Becoming an Official Village
Sagaponack officially became an incorporated village on September 2, 2005. This happened after a nearby area, Dunehampton, tried to become a village. If Dunehampton had succeeded, it might have blocked Sagaponack's access to the beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Both villages have been working to solve beach problems, like erosion, which is when the sand gets washed away.
Sagaponack's Wealthy Status
Sagaponack is famous for its expensive homes. In July 2015, and again in 2018, its ZIP Code (11962) was named the most expensive in the United States. The average price for a home here was very high, reaching $8.5 million in 2018. Many of the most expensive homes are found on streets like Daniels Lane.
For a long time, starting in the 1950s and 1960s, Sagaponack was a quiet and affordable place. This made it popular with many writers and people who worked in the book business.
