SahBabii's Early Life
Saaheem Malik Valdery was born in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in the South Side of the city, in an area called Wentworth Gardens. His aunt, TeeBaby, gave him the nickname "SahBabii" when he was very young.
In early 2010, when he was 13 years old, his family moved. They moved to Atlanta, Georgia to help his older brother T3 with his music career. They settled in the Sylvan Hills neighborhood.
SahBabii's Music Journey
Saaheem started making music as 'SahBabii' soon after moving to Atlanta. Besides making music, SahBabii also posted videos of himself playing video games. He shared these videos of Grand Theft Auto Online on his YouTube channels, "Noᴙmal" and "Normalty."
First Mixtapes and Big Hit
After a break of almost three years, SahBabii released a new mixtape called S.A.N.D.A.S. in 2016. At this time, he was also working at Dick's Sporting Goods. He recorded S.A.N.D.A.S. using music software called Cubase and a broken microphone. He recorded it in his brother T3's bedroom.
This mixtape included the song "Pull Up wit ah Stick." It featured rapper Loso Loaded. The song quickly became very popular on Instagram. This happened after SahBabii shared a short 15-second video clip of the song before it was officially released.
Soon after, the song gained a lot of attention. It got millions of plays on SoundCloud. The music video for "Pull Up wit ah Stick" came out in February 2017. It has been viewed over 70 million times on the WorldStarHipHop YouTube channel. In March 2017, SahBabii signed a big record deal with Warner Bros. Records. His family also started their own music company, Casting Bait Music Group. SahBabii's father, Delval, became his manager.
Remixes and Collaborations
The song "Pull Up wit ah Stick" was so popular that many famous rappers made their own versions. These included Young Thug, T-Pain, Fetty Wap, and Wiz Khalifa. Lil Wayne also remixed the song and put it on his Dedication 6 mixtape.
Even Drake was interested in adding his own part to the official remix. Young Thug flew SahBabii to London, UK, where he also met Drake.
In May 2017, it was announced that S.A.N.D.A.S. would be re-released. This new version would be improved and would include new songs. Audio engineer Alex Tumay and T3 worked on making the sound better for the re-release.
Later Projects and Decisions
After the success of S.A.N.D.A.S., SahBabii's work with Warner Bros. Records ended. His next big project was a full-length album called Squidtastic, released in 2018. He then released an EP (a shorter music collection) called 3P in 2019.
In early 2019, SahBabii said he might stop making music. However, he changed his mind. He explained that he couldn't leave his fans. He said he wanted to give them as much music as possible before he eventually retires.
On July 8, 2020, SahBabii released the album Barnacles. The music website Complex said that this album really showed SahBabii's unique and dream-like sound. They described Barnacles as a special look into what makes his music so appealing. One of his songs, "Purple Umbrella," uses a sample from "Star-Stealing Girl" by Yasunori Mitsuda.
SahBabii has also worked with other artists. In February 2020, he was featured on rapper Trippie Redd's project A Love Letter to You 4 (Deluxe) on the song 'Amazinggg.' On September 16, 2020, he released his single "Gates to the Sun (POLLEN Singles)" with Japanese musician Joji. In November 2020, SahBabii was on rapper Nav's mixtape Emergency Tsunami, on the song 'Do Ya Deed'. He also appeared on the song "Solitaires" with Ateyaba in early 2021.
SahBabii's first official studio album, Do It For Demon, came out on October 27, 2021. This album is a tribute to his cousin, DemonChild, who passed away in 2020. In an interview, SahBabii shared that Do It For Demon was the first of his projects recorded with professional equipment. He and T3 even built a brand new studio for it.
In December 2022, SahBabii released a project called LeakOut. This project included music that had been shared online without his permission in the weeks before. He later released new singles, "How Bout U?" on January 31, 2023, and "Lost All My Feelings" on May 16, 2023.
On November 8, 2024, SahBabii released another studio album called Saaheem. This album is named after his birth name. It includes his 2023 single "Lost All My Feelings."
